THE STONES’ LATEST IN A MINOR KEY

Last year, Rolling Stone bassist Bill Wyman remarked on Mick Jagger’s reputation as a ladies’ man by saying, “I’ve had girls who have been with Mick and I’ve heard very disappointing reports on his performance.”

Now, however, the tables have turned. The British tabloid press has been having a field day with an alleged affair between the 50-year-old musician and Mandy Smith, who claims to have been Wyman’s 13-year-old lover. According to an interview in the London Sunday Mail, Smith, now 16, said Wyman “fell for me straight away” after meeting her at the British Rock and Pop Awards ceremony in London several years ago. Smith claimed she traveled abroad with Wyman and even met most of the members of the Stones, all of whom, she said, “knew I was under age. They used to joke about it and helped to keep my affair with Bill a secret.”

According to the Mail, Smith is now staying at a Spanish villa with her new 22-year-old boyfriend after “the Stones empire” made Smith and her family a $250,000 offer to keep news of the relationship quiet. Smith’s mother, who is 38, was quoted as saying, “Mandy has had her fling in a world most teen-agers only dream about, but now she’s got it out of her system and she’s back with us.”

Stones spokesman Paul Wasserman said: “I only deal with the band’s professional lives, not their private lives. But if Bill would have asked my permission ahead of time, I would’ve said, ‘Don’t be a fool.’ ” Wasserman did question reports that the “Stones empire” had offered Smith money to hush up the affair, saying, “Whenever band members have personal problems or legal difficulties, it’s always been handled individually, not on a group level.”
