SAN DIEGO HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Daugherty Delivers Orange Glen : Game of Keep Away Doesn’t Work for San Marcos, 26-15

Orange Glen, in spite of a long drought when it could not seem to get its hands on the football, took advantage of the possessions it did have to beat San Marcos, 26-15, in a nonleague game Friday night.

After scoring two touchdowns and opening a 14-0 lead with four minutes remaining in the first quarter, Orange Glen ran only six offensive plays during a 24-minute stretch lasting until the four-minute mark of the third quarter.

However, when it did have the ball, Orange Glen was nearly unstopable, scoring on five of eight possessions.

Duffy Daugherty, a senior starting his first game, passed for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns, and the weary Orange Glen defense held together to make enough big plays to help the county’s seventh-ranked team start its season with a victory.

“Our defense did a good job of holding everything together in keeping us ahead,” Orange Glen Coach Jeff Carlovsky said. “And our offense was lucky enough to be clicking tonight.”

Still, San Marcos--ranked ninth in the county--controlled the ball throughout most of the game thanks to its 6-5, 240-pound senior fullback Jim Jennings. Running mostly between the tackles, Jennings pounded out 89 yards on 19 carries.

Jennings scored on a one-yard run midway through the second quarter and set up a Abel Neri field goal late in the first half as San Marcos overcame its early problems and closed to 14-9.

However, San Marcos’ offense couldn’t keep Daugherty and company on the sidelines forever.

Orange Glen finally got a drive going late in the third quarter, moving 82 yards to set up a 21-yard field goal Sean Cloonan. Then, the next time it had the ball, Orange Glen moved 69 yards to score, Daugherty finishing off the drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Scott Carlovsky. That made it 26-9 late in the fourth quarter and effectively put an end to San Marcos’ ball-control game.

In the first quarter the Patriots scored twice, once on a two-yard run by Ray LeBrun and another time on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Daugherty to split end Matt Fiorello.

On the touchdown pass, Daugherty noticed Fiorello was getting single coverage and changed the play at the line of scrimmage. Fiorello ran a simple streak up the right sideline and had a step on cornerback Gary Larrabee when he caught Daugherty’s pass.

“Duffy answered a lot of our questions tonight,” Carlovsky said. “He proved that he can throw the football.”

After its lead was cut to 14-9, Orange Glen got a big play from linebacker Gregg Anderson, who blocked a San Marcos punt two seconds before halftime. That set up Cloonan for a 29-yard field goal that made the score 17-9 at halftime.
