Golf / Larry Stewart : Riviera CC Is Site of Charity Event Monday

The seventh annual Amy Alcott pro-am tournament, for the benefit of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, will be played Monday at the Riviera Country Club.

Celebrity guests include Dinah Shore, Rick Dees of radio station KIIS-fm, Johnny Mathis, Monty Hall and Kay Cockerill of UCLA, the 1986 U.S. Amateur champion.

The tournament will have a shotgun start of 1 p.m. A touring LPGA pro will play with each foursome. Among the pros participating are Jane Geddes, Susie McAllister, Beverly Klass, Gail Hirata, Joanne Pacillo and Denise Strebig.

Alcott, recently voted the sixth winner of Golf Digest’s Founders Cup, will be given the award during the tournament.

The 18th hole at Riviera is regarded as one of the toughest finishing holes in the country. But during a recent father-son tournament, 16-year-old Jim Brewer shot an eagle-2 on the par-4, 420-yard hole. Brewer hit a 3-iron about 185 yards into the cup.

Brewer’s father, James, is assistant secretary and general manager of Los Angeles Country Club.

Billy Barty’s three-day tournament at the Canyon Hotel in Palm Springs will end today. The tournament is for the benefit of the Billy Barty Foundation for Little People and the Harbor/UCLA Medical Center Short Stature Clinic. Among the participants are Claude Akins, James Bacon, Rick Barry, Doug McClure, Johnny Mann and Donald O’Connor. . . . Tickets are on sale for the Las Vegas senior tournament Nov. 6-9 at the Desert Inn Country Club. . . . The Bonvicini Italian-American tournament will be held Monday, Sept. 22, at El Dorado Country Club in Long Beach. The scramble tournament will be emceed by sportscaster Charleye Wright of KIIS-fm. Among others playing will be Lou Campanelli, University of California men’s basketball coach, Joan Bonvicini, Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball coach, and Ric LaCivita, CBS sports producer. Proceeds will go toward women’s basketball scholarships at Cal State Long Beach. . . . The Variety Club’s 15th annual golf and tennis outing will be held at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana Sept. 22. The event helps provide scholarships for underprivileged students in Los Angeles. . . . The next Golden State tour event will be held at Mission Hills in Palm Springs Sept. 22. . . . Bobby Natividad shot a 71 for overall low-gross honors at the Fil-Am Golf Club’s 13th invitational tournament at Los Amigos Country Club. Armand Baluyot had the low net, 53. Pom Cornelio with a 72 and Leroy Chaio with a 62 were the Class A flight winners. Proceeds will be used to promote junior golf among Filipinos and other Oriental youth. . . . Lance Cpl. David Stephens defeated Maj. Steve Ebert in sudden death on the first extra hole in the recent 36-hole Marine Memorial Golf Club tournament at El Toro. Each shot 74-73--147 in regulation play. Ebert won the championship flight with a low net of 68-67--135.
