Tennis Roundup : Advance of Argentines Is Led by Vilas in West German Open

Veteran Guillermo Vilas of Argentina defeated Cassio Motta of Brazil, 7-5, 7-6, and three other Argentines also advanced to the second round of the $250,000 West German Open Tuesday at Hamburg.

Franco Davin ousted Damir Keretic of West Germany, 7-5, 6-1, Guillermo Perez-Roldan upset Diego Perez of Uruguay, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4, and Horacio de la Pena eliminated Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia, 7-6, 6-4.

The only Argentine casualty was Christian Minuissi, who battled for three sets before falling to Australia’s Paul McNamee, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.

Boris Becker of West Germany and other high-seeded players begin play today on the clay courts of Hamburg’s Rothenbaum Club.

Larissa Savchenko, the Soviet Union’s No. 1 player, upset No. 5 seed Wendy Turnbull of Australia, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of the $125,000 Eckerd Tennis Open at Bardmoor Country Club at Largo, Fla.

No. 4 seed Carling Bassett of Canada, a finalist in the 1984 tournament, won eight straight games in beating Betsy Nagelsen, 6-3, 6-0.

No. 2 seed Zina Garrison, No. 3 Stephanie Rehe and No. 6 Terry Phelps of Larchmont, N.Y. advanced into the second round with victories.

Garrison defeated Janine Thompson of Australia, 6-2, 6-2; Rehe beat Svetlana Parkhomenko of the Soviet Union, 6-1, 6-1, and Phelps outlasted Camille Benjamin, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

In other first-round matches, Lori McNeil defeated Dinky Van Rensburg of South Africa, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3; Marianne Werdel edged Pam Casale, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6; Michelle Torres beat Lisa Bonder, 4-1 retired, and Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa ousted Debbie Spence, 6-2, 6-0.
