PREP FOOTBALL : Valencia Takes Advantage of Sonora Mistakes, 56-0
If football games were rated like movies, the contest between Valencia High School and Sonora Thursday should have been rated R.
After what Valencia did to Sonora at La Habra Stadium, plus what Sonora did to itself, parents should have shielded their children’s eyes.
Valencia scored eight touchdowns and won, 56-0, as the young Sonora team committed most every mistake in the book, and repeated some of them for emphasis.
The Raiders’ quest to score their first touchdown of the season, or even to maintain temporary control of the football, was drowned in a deluge of turnovers. They gave up five fumbles and junior quarterback Graham Staines threw four interceptions.
Valencia looked as if it could hardly believe its good fortune early on, and the Tigers wasted no time in capitalizing.
Sonora’s Eric Johnson fumbled the opening kickoff, Valencia’s Alex Munoz recovered at the Raider 22-yard line, and the Tigers’ Tony Goulet scored the game’s first touchdown on a nine-yard run with just a little more than a minute gone.
It was downhill from then on for the Raiders. They fumbled on their next possession and Valencia’s Keith Barton recovered at Sonora’s 34, and before three minutes had run off the clock, Goulet had scored a second touchdown on a 19-yard run. Paul Rivera’s kick made it 14-0.
Sorona fumbled again to set up an eight-yard scoring pass from Valencia quarterback Chris DeRisio to Mike Edwards. DeRisio completed 4 of 6 passes for 90 yards, all to Edwards.
Then, Brett Gregory of Valencia scored twice in the first three minutes of the second quarter, on a 10-yard interception return and a 50-yard punt return.
Goulet gained 123 yards in 14 carries and the Tigers’ other running back, Dorian Estes, had 12 carries for 68 yards. Edwards caught 4 passes for 90 yards and picked off two passes.
In other action:
Norco 16, Orange 0--The Cougars used a balanced offense and a tough defense to stop the Panthers at Fred Kelly Stadium in Orange. Titus Campbell rushed for 138 yards in 21 carries to lead the attack. Campbell scored on runs of 1 yard and 10 yards. Norco (2-0) had 413 yards on offense and held Orange (1-1) to just 69 yards.
Troy 34, El Dorado 20--Todd Murdock rushed for two touchdowns and Mike Pawlawski threw for two and rushed for one to lead the Warriors (2-0) at Valencia High’s Bradford Stadium.
Murdock, who rushed 10 times for 62 yards, scored on runs of 9 and 22 yards in the first half. He also kicked four extra points. Pawlawski completed 11 of 21 attempts for 156 yards. Doug Yates completed 18 of 38 attempts for 227 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Golden Hawks (0-2).
