East Roundup : Penn State Defeats Boston College

D.J. Dozier scored on a 17-yard reception and a 7-yard run and No. 6-ranked Penn State took advantage of seven turnovers to defeat Boston College, 26-14, Saturday night at Foxboro, Mass.

The Nittany Lions (2-0) improved their series record against the Eagles to 14-1.

Boston College (1-2) closed to within 12-7 early in the third quarter on reserve quarterback Shawn Halloran’s 44-yard touchdown pass to Darren Flutie.

But Penn State retaliated, driving 54 yards in 7 plays, with John Shaffer hitting running back Dozier in the end zone with a 17-yard pass for a 19-7 advantage.

The Eagles took the ensuing kickoff and moved to the two-yard line, but, on an option play, linebacker Shane Conlan intercepted a pass attempt by tailback Troy Stradford and downed the ball in the end zone.

Conlan keyed the defensive effort with 11 tackles--9 unassisted--and 1 sack.

Dozier’s second score came with 6:41 left in the game, his seven-yard run extending Penn State’s lead to 26-7.

Halloran connected with Tyrone Taylor on a 27-yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring.

Halloran entered the game late in the second quarter after starter Mark Kamphaus was removed because of an injured thumb on his throwing hand. Halloran was intercepted three times and Kamphaus, getting his first collegiate start, was picked off once. The Eagles also lost two fumbles.

Maryland 24, West Virginia 3--The Terrapin defense zeroed in on the Mountaineer running game at Morgantown, W.Va., in a game that also featured two touchdown passes from Dan Henning to Ferrell Edmunds.

The Mountaineers (2-1) managed just 107 yards rushing.

Maryland built a 10-0 halftime lead as Henning capped an 80-yard, first-quarter drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Edmunds, and Dan Plocki kicked a 26-yard field goal with two minutes to go in the half.

Henning’s second scoring pass, 34 yards to Edmunds, came with 2:21 left in the third quarter. It was set up when Scott Saylor recovered a fumbled punt by Harvey Smith at the West Virginia 23.

Virginia Tech 26, Syracuse 17--Maurice Williams rushed for 159 yards in 12 carries and scored on runs of 23 and 57 yards as the Hokies won at Syracuse, N.Y. Eddie Hunter added 125 yards in 21 carries as Virginia Tech gained 374 yards on the ground.

Syracuse (0-3) is off to its worst start since 1981, when the team lost three games in current Coach Dick MacPherson’s first season. Virginia Tech is 2-1.

Scott Schwedes caught 6 passes to become Syracuse’s career receiving leader with 106, eclipsing the record of 104 set by Art Monk of the Washington Redskins.

Rutgers 48, Cincinnati 28--Brian Cobb caught two of quarterback Joe Gagliardi’s four touchdown passes and returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown as the Scarlet Knights won at Piscataway, N.J.

Cobb caught scoring passes of 15 and 44 yards in the second quarter, and his kickoff return in the third quarter gave Rutgers some breathing room after the Bearcats had pulled to within 29-20 early in the quarter.

Brown 21, Yale 7--Junior quarterback Mark Donovan completed 18 of 27 passes for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for another in leading the Bruins over the Bulldogs at Providence, R.I., in the season opener for both Ivy League teams. In the second half, Donovan completed 9 of 12 passes.

Penn 21, Dartmouth 7--Rich Comizio rushed for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Quakers in an Ivy League game at Hanover, N.H. Chris Flynn added 87 yards and a touchdown for Penn.

The game opened the final season for Dartmouth Coach Joe Yukica, who was fired last fall but reinstated after a court fight.

Cornell 39, Princeton 8--Marty Stallone threw 3 touchdown passes, and Jeff Johnson rushed for 167 yards to lead Cornell at Ithaca, N.Y.

Cornell gained 419 yards in its first victory in a season opener since 1980, when the Big Red defeated Princeton, 17-7. It was Princeton’s worst defeat since a 47-13 loss to Cornell in 1967.

Harvard 34, Columbia 0--George Sorbara rushed for a pair of one-yard touchdowns at Cambridge, Mass., to help the Crimson send the Lions to their 22nd straight loss.

Columbia’s winless streak is 25 games, having tied two games in 1983. The game was the season opener for both Ivy League teams.

Temple 38, Florida A&M; 17--Paul Palmer rushed for 233 yards in 33 carries and scored a touchdown as the Owls won at Philadelphia. Sophomore Todd McNair added touchdown runs of 4 and 6 yards for the Owls (2-1).

William & Mary 30, Bucknell 13--Greg DeGennaro completed 28 of 41 passes for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Indians in a nonconference game at Lewisburg, Pa.

Holy Cross 38, Lafayette 14--Jeff Wiley threw for 320 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Crusaders beat the Leopards in a Colonial Conference game at Easton, Pa. It was the first meeting between the schools. Holy Cross is 2-0 in the conference and overall, while Lafayette is 0-1 and 1-1.

Lehigh 41, Colgate 39--Jim Harris passed for 292 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Engineers held off a furious rally to defeat the Red Raiders in a Colonial Conference game at Bethlehem, Pa. Lehigh is 1-1 in the conference and overall, while Colgate is 0-2 and 0-1.
