Southland Roundup : Claremont-Mudd Beats Redlands

Junior running back Chris Dabrow ran for 199 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead Claremont-Mudd to a 27-10 win Saturday over Redlands in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Claremont.

Dabrow, who rushed for only 188 yards last season, carried 18 times and scored all of Claremont-Mudd’s touchdowns. The Stags finished with 306 yards rushing.

In the first half, Dabrow had touchdown runs of 5 and 73 yards to give Claremont-Mudd (1-0) a 14-3 lead. Dabrow scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 11 in the third quarter to give the Stags a 27-10 lead, and they coasted the rest of the way.

Azusa Pacific 20, Occidental 20--Sean Dewberry kicked a 39-yard field goal for Occidental with 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game, and Azusa Pacific missed two field goal tries in the final 20 seconds as the two teams tied, 20-20, in a nonconference game at Occidental.

The Cougars had a chance to win after Bruce Stinson intercepted a Mike Krajnik pass and returned it 24 yards to the Occidental 26 with 27 seconds left. A five-yard run moved it to the 21, where Ken Arlt lined up for a 38-yard field goal.

Arlt’s attempt was wide, but Occidental (0-1-1) was called for offsides, so Arlt got another chance. But his 33-yard attempt was also wide.

Christian Okoye led Azusa Pacific (1-0-1, ranked fifth in the NAIA poll) with 169 yards in 21 carries, including touchdown runs of 72 and 1 in the second quarter.

Cal Lutheran 37, Sonoma St. 21--Quarterback Tom Bonds completed 20 of 25 passes for 256 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Kingsmen to a nonconference win at Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran (2-0) took a 7-0 lead 13 seconds into the game, as Mark Hodges returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Tight end Darren Gottschalk caught touchdown passes of 17 and 30 yards from Bonds to help the Kingsmen take a 27-11 halftime lead.

Bonds threw his third touchdown pass, an eight-yarder to Joe Monarrez, in the third quarter as Cal Lutheran increased its lead to 37-8. Sonoma State managed only 208 total yards.

The game was marred by 25 penalties, including 15 against Cal Lutheran. There were nine personal foul penalties, five against Cal Lutheran, but no ejections or injuries.

La Verne 21, U. San Diego 19--Cornerback Steve Blair returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown with seven minutes left to lead the Leopards to a nonconference win at La Verne.

Blair’s touchdown gave La Verne a 21-9 lead, and San Diego never threatened after that. La Verne took an intentional safety, and San Diego scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 10 seconds left to make it 21-19.

The Leopard defense controlled the game, forcing six turnovers and limiting the Torero offense to only 19 yards rushing. La Verne sacked Dixon five times and forced him into four interceptions and numerous incompletions. Dixon finished with 22 completions in 56 attempts for 290 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Cal State Northridge 20, Cal State Hayward 7--Tailback Mike Kane ran for 133 yards in 26 carries and caught a touchdown pass to lead the Matadors to a nonconference win at Northridge.

Whittier 9, Menlo 7--Greg Salcido caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Ramon Juarez with just over four minutes left to lead the Poets to a nonconference win at Whittier.

Humboldt State 27, UC Santa Barbara 7--Quarterback Matt Peterson completed 26 of 52 passes for 281 yards and ran for a touchdown to lead the Lumberjacks to a nonconference win at Arcata, Calif. Humboldt receiver Blair Hatch caught 8 passes for 117 yards.

UC Davis 32, Cal Poly SLO 21--Senior quarterback Chris Petersen completed 13 of 22 passes for 232 yards and 4 touchdowns--two going to wide receiver Wayne Adkins--as the Aggies won their home opener.

Cal Poly (1-1) quarterback Robert Perez threw for 278 yards and 1 touchdown but was intercepted 3 times, one leading to a UC Davis (1-1) touchdown. Adkins, a senior, had an 80-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter and a 28-yarder in the second.
