Hard-serving John Sadri scored the first upset in the $289,000 Transamerica Open tennis tournament at San Francisco Tuesday, defeating fifth-seeded Matt Anger, 6-4, 6-4.

Sadri gave up only 10 points on his serve, half of them double faults. But he balanced that with 5 aces.

He broke Anger once in each set for the margin of victory.

Meanwhile, Peter Fleming, who entered the tournament as a wild-card, scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Greg Holmes.

“I’ve improved at least 100 percent in the last month,” Fleming said after the match.

He credited the change to the disappearance of nagging injuries.

In another match, Bud Schultz defeated Christo Van Rensburg of South Africa, 7-6, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded John McEnroe and second-seeded Jimmy Connors open singles play today.

Top-seeded Henri Leconte of France, winner of last week’s $315,000 West German Open, was eliminated by Roland Agenor of Haiti in the first round of the $225,000 Conde de Godo tournament at Barcelona, Spain.

Leconte, who retired after losing the first set, 6-1, said he suffered a sudden drop in blood pressure.

“I suddenly felt bad because of the heat and also because I have played six straight weeks playing almost every day,” he said.

“My doctor warned me that I could not keep up this pace.”

Third-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia also lost his opening-round match. Countryman Marian Vajda ousted him, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Fifth-seeded Mikael Pernfors of Sweden was eliminated by Guillermo Perez Roldan of Argentina, 6-1, 6-4.

In other matches, sixth-seeded Thierry Tulasne of France beat Eduardo Bengoechea of Argentina, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, and eighth-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain defeated Jimmy Brown 6-0, 6-1.
