PREP FOOTBALL : Marinovich Throws 2 TDs in 31-0 Win
Capistrano Valley High School quarterback Todd Marinovich completed only seven passes Friday night, but two were for touchdowns as the Cougars routed Corona del Mar, 31-0, in LeBard Stadium.
Marinovich broke his left thumb two weeks ago and only practiced one day this week.
The layoff showed as Marinovich appeared tentative on most of his passes, completing only 7 of 18 for 140 yards.
“Todd didn’t look sharp tonight but that’s what I expected,” Capistrano Valley Coach Dick Enright said.
Marinovich accounted for Capistrano Valley’s first touchdown as running back Tom Adams caught a short pass over the middle and raced 74 yards for the score.
Without a reliable passing attack, Capistrano Valley (2-1) turned to its running game. The Cougars scored on an 80-yard drive in the second quarter with Jeff Wilson’s one-yard run giving Capistrano Valley a 14-0 halftime lead.
Adams overpowered Corona del Mar (1-2) most of the evening and finished with 75 yards in 16 carries.
Despite the poor night, Marinovich moved into third place on Orange County’s all-time career passing records, with 4,942 yards.
