Reserve quarterback John Moses was an ace-in-the-hole for Mission Viejo High School as the Diablos broke a scoreless tie in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat Fountain Valley, 14-0, Friday night in a nonleague game at Mission Viejo.

Moses, a senior, replaced injured starter Tony Arone on the first play of the fourth quarter and coolly completed three passes in a nine-play drive. His last completion was a 19-yard screen to Brett Varner for a 6-0 advantage. Danny Reed kicked the extra point, and the Diablos were ahead, 7-0.

Mission Viejo (1-2) received its biggest game of the year from running back Darrin Sweazy, who rushed for 112 yards on 18 carries and scored the Diablos’ second touchdown. Sweazy broke off right tackle and ran 55 yards down the right sideline midway through the fourth quarter. Reed’s extra point made it 14-0.

Fountain Valley (0-3), playing one of the county’s toughest nonleague schedules, had an early opportunity to score, but running back Andy Fisher fumbled inside the Diablo 10-yard line on the Barons’ first drive of the game. The ball was recoved by Mission Viejo defensive lineman David Huettl at the 11. It proved to be Fountain Valley’s only real opportunity to score all night.

Mission Viejo Coach Bill Crow was happy to get his first win of the season.

“We controlled the ball out there tonight,” he said. “In the second half, we came out with more desire and that helped us.”

Arone was forced to leave the game with a banged-up hip after scrambling out of the pocket. That’s when Moses took over.

“I told Moses, ‘When you get your shot, make the best of it,’ ” Crow said. “I’m so proud of him and the job he did tonight.”

With Sweazy leading the way, the Diablos outgained the Barons, 307 yards to 154. Baron quarterback David Henigan was 10 of 21 for 114 yards with 1 interception, and running back Derek Tuescher had 50 yards on 13 carries.

Mission Viejo was penalized 8 times for 80 yards and Fountain Valley 9 times for 85 yards.
