PREP FOOTBALL : Todd Lifts the Artists to Victory : He Gains 155 Yards as Laguna Beach Beats Dana Hills

Johnathan Todd’s running sparked Laguna Beach High School to a 14-6 nonleague win over Dana Hills Friday night on Guyer Field at Laguna Beach in front of 1,500.

Todd gained 155 yards in 27 carries. In two previous games, he gained 433 yards.

The Artists’ victory was the first for interim Coach Lloyd Cotton. He replaced Cedrick Hardman who was suspended Tuesday night by the school board after he was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine last week.

Laguna Beach (3-0) scored first on Ian Vickers’ 22-yard field goal with 33 seconds left in the first quarter. Dana Hills (2-1) gained a 6-3 lead in the second quarter on a 37-yard Jason Hickman touchdown pass to Bill Mitchell. The extra point failed.

Vickers tied the game, 6-6, with a 33-yard field goal in the third quarter. Andy Myers broke the tie with a five-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

In other nonleague action:

Troy 31, Anaheim 10--Senior Todd Murdock scored two touchdowns, kicked a field goal, two extra points and rushed for 77 yards in 10 carries to lead the Warriors (3-0) past the Colonists (0-3) at Fullerton District Stadium. Troy quarterback Mike Pawlawski was 6 for 9 passing for 142 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had a 59-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Anaheim was held in the second half to minus 25 yards total offense.

Loara 28, Canyon 0--The Saxons combined an opportunistic offense and stingy defense Friday night at Glover Stadium. Loara (3-0) recorded their third straight shutout, scored on a 45-yard interception return by Edy Andros midway through the second quarter to open the scoring. Two plays later, after a Canyon fumble, Andy Janney scored on a 17-yard run to make it 14-0. The Loara defense limited the Comanches (1-2) to only 54 second-half yards and 125 for the game, and forced five turnovers, three of which led to scores. Janney led all rushers with 56 yards in 13 carries.

Sunny Hills 17, Cypress 7--The Lancers (3-0) capitalized on two Cypress turnovers and defeated the Centurions (2-1) in front of 1,500 at Western High. Sunny Hills quarterback David Chisum completed 8 of 11 passes for 163 yards. He threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Tim Imperiali in the second quarter and scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

Cypress running back Blaise Bryant gained 72 yards in 17 carries. Bryant also caught a 69-yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Brunet in the second quarter to account for the Centurions’ only points.

San Clemente 7, Laguna Hills 6--The Tritons turned away a scoring attempt on the final play for the second straight week.

Laguna Hills (1-2) scored its only touchdown with no time left. The Hawks tried a pass to running back Mike Cotner for a two-point conversion. Defensive back Scott Phillips deflected the ball.

Penalties extended the game. San Clemente (2-1) was called for a face-mask violation on a pass into the end zone from the Triton 14 yard line. Laguna Hills tried again from the seven-yard line with no time left. San Clemente was called for pass interference. Laguna Hills then scored on a three-yard pass from Chris Leigber to Brian Fleming.

Chino 20, Garden Grove 13--Ron Velarde got the Cowboys off to a fast start with a 50-yard punt return and later scored on a five-yard run as the Cowboys defeated the Argonauts in Chino. It was Garden Grove’s third-straight loss.
