Prep Football : Yourstone Sparks Katella Win

Jeff Yourstone did a little bit of everything Saturday night, rushing for one touchdown, throwing for another and intercepting a pass to lead Katella to a 23-19 nonleague victory over Orange at Anaheim’s Glover Field.

Yourstone, a 5-foot 11-inch junior, completed 12 of 16 passes for 186 yards, including a 69-yard scoring toss to Ted Brown in the first quarter. Yourstone also scored what proved to be the winning touchdown when he capped an 11-play, 73-yard drive in the third quarter with a 22-yard bootleg run.

As if that wasn’t enough, he thwarted Orange’s final threat by intercepting a desperate Mike Stock pass with 1:17 left in the game.

With a slew of big plays, Katella played exciting, balanced football. The Knights (2-1) racked up 185 yards rushing, 125 by Todd Muzi, and kept the Panthers off guard by mixing up their plays brilliantly.

“Whenever they took something away, we countered with something else,” assistant coach Tom Jessee said. “We’ve been very balanced all year long.”

Orange (1-2) relied upon the big play all night, scoring on touchdown passes of 70 and 27 yards by Stock and a 61-yard run by Paul Maund. But the Panthers came up short in the kicking department and it spelled doom.

With its long snapper injured, Orange disdained an easy field goal attempt in the closing seconds of the first half and opted to run the ball from the three-yard line. A burst up the middle by Maund came up a yard short of the goal line as the gun sounded.

In other nonleague action:

Lutheran (Orange) 19, Los Angeles Lutheran 0--The Lancers (1-2) took a 13-0 halftime lead at Orange as sophomore running back Jason Neben scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of 45 and 7 yards. The second touchdown was set up by a 33-yard pass from Robby Gibbs to wide receiver Del Montell. Neben, who finished the game with 206 yards in 18 carries, scored his third touchdown on a 79-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Lions fell to 0-3.

Trabuco Hills 44, Rim of the World 6--The Mustangs (2-1) took a 28-0 halftime advantage in the game in Mission Viejo Stadium. Trabuco Hills running back Joe Scienski scored on touchdown runs of 8 and 99 yards, and quarterback Brett Miller (11 for 15 for 207 yards) completed scoring passes of 10 and 32 yards to Jeff Dooley. Mark Levy scored the last Mustang touchdown on a 44-yard pass from John Barnes. The Scots fell to 0-3.

Southern California Christian 26, Yucca Valley 2--The Flames (2-1) were led by quarterback Sean Crawford, who rushed for a 70-yard touchdown to open the scoring and later completed a 25-yard scoring pass to Chad Lambie in the nonleague game at Buena Park High School.

Crawford completed 7 of 12 pases for 107 yards. Tailback Eric Norwood scored twice, on runs of 10 and 30 yards. Yucca Valley is 2-1.
