Fullerton College Coach Hal Sherbeck failed for the second straight week to win his 200th game Saturday night as Taft defeated the Hornets, 51-27, in Fullerton District Stadium.
Taft’s victory marked the first time in the series that the visiting team has won. The Cougars’ 51 points were the most ever scored against a Sherbeck team. Fullerton (0-2) is off to its worst start since 1964.
In a game dominated by the offense, Taft’s ability to make the big play provided the difference.
Taft running back Ken Thomas broke the game open with 14:30 left by eluding several Fullerton tacklers in his own end zone and racing 98 yards for a touchdown. Thomas’ touchdown gave Taft a 31-21 lead from which Fullerton never recovered. Taft scored on its opening possession as quarterback Rodney Fletcher hit Jason Phillips on a 51-yard touchdown pass that helped the Cougars to a 24-14 halftime lead.
Taft’s Michael Moore finished with 104 yards in 11 carries to lead the Cougars. Fullerton’s Matt Greer rushed for 168 yards in 21 carries.
