Big Eight Roundup : Indiana Too Much for Missouri, 41-24

Tailback Spud Washington and quarterback Brian Dewitz scored twice apiece, helping unbeaten Indiana score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a 41-24 victory over Missouri Saturday at Columbia, Mo.

Safeties Alex Green and Leonard Bell set up touchdowns for Indiana (3-0) in the first and fourth quarters with fumble recoveries. Missouri (1-2) lost its sixth straight game against a Big Ten school.

Washington, a 173-pound junior, caught 7 passes for 43 yards and ran for 54 yards in 10 carries. He scored on an 8-yard pass from Dave Kramme and a 1-yard run.

Dewitz, idle through nearly three quarters because of an injury suffered in Indiana’s 52-29 victory over Navy last week, took over for Kramme late in the third quarter. He ran 23 and 4 yards for touchdowns.

Oklahoma State 23, Illinois St. 7--At Stillwater, Okla., tailback Barry Sanders rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown, and defensive end Jerry Deckard returned an interception 82 yards for another score as the Cowboys ended a two-game losing streak.

The game marked the debut of Mike Gundy as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback. The freshman completed 9 of 20 attempts for 121 yards as Oklahoma State evened its record at 2-2. Illinois State dropped to 1-3.

Oklahoma State’s Thurman Thomas gained 65 yards in 14 carries, but freshman Barry Sanders paced the Cowboys with 132 yards in 25 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown run.

Iowa State 36, Wichita St. 14--Alex Espinoza passed for three touchdowns as the Cyclones turned back the Shockers at Ames, Iowa.

The Cyclones (2-1) took a 19-0 lead in the second quarter on Espinoza’s touchdown passes of 27 yards to Eddie Brown and 6 yards to Tom Schulting, a 23-yard field goal by Rick Frank and a safety.

Espinoza added a nine-yard scoring pass, his sixth touchdown pass of the season, to Tom Stawniak.

Wichita State (1-3) was playing without leading rusher Valasco Smith, who sprained an ankle last week.

Kansas 20, Indiana State 6--Arnold Snell rushed for 168 yards, the most by a Jayhawk running back in nearly six years, and two touchdowns in a victory over the Sycamores at Lawrence, Kan.

Snell piled up the most yards by a Kansas runner since Kerwin Bell gained 216 against Kansas State on Nov. 1, 1980.

Kansas is 2-1, Indiana State 2-2.
