Roundup : Fullerton Uses Big Second Half to Defeat Dana Hills, 43-27

Fullerton High School used a 30-point second half Thursday night to post a 43-27 come-from-behind victory over Dana Hills in a nonleague game played in Fullerton District Stadium.

Fullerton running back Mike Chacon started the comeback with a 42-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half. The Indians’ extra point made it 20-20.

After forcing a Dana Hills punt, the Indians drove 52 yards in 10 plays to score the go-ahead touchdown on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Aaron Acton to wide receiver Richi Burrell to make the score 27-20.

On Dana Hills’ next possession, Burrell intercepted Dolphin quarterback Jason Hickman at the Dana Hills 27-yard line to set up Darrell Corbin’s four-yard touchdown run that gave Fullerton a 34-20 lead.

Dana Hills (2-2) trimmed the lead to 34-27 in the fourth quarter on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Hickman to tight end Gregg Barbee.

But the Indians (3-1) put the game out of reach on an 83-yard touchdown pass play from Acton to Burrell and a safety late in the fourth quarter.

In other nonleague action:

La Habra 20, Lakewood 6--Junior quarterback Matt Shackelford completed 16 of 28 passes for 10 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Highlanders (2-1) to the victory over the Lancers (1-2) before 1,500 at Lakewood High School.

Shackelford, who completed 9 of his first 10 attempts for 134 yards, hit John Robertson with a 25-yard touchdown pass in the first period and threw a 9-yard touchdown pass in the second. Sal Maldonado scored La Habra’s third touchdown on a 19-yard pass from Shackelford in the third quarter.

Robertson caught 7 passes for 120 yards and has now scored 6 touchdowns this year. Mike Dunnuck had 6 receptions for 53 yards, and Kevin Capps led all rushers with 53 yards.

Savanna 20, Buena Park 6--Tony Osendorf led the Rebels on both sides of the ball, completing 10 of 24 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown and intercepting two Buena Park passes on defense as Savanna defeated the Coyotes before 400 in Glover Stadium.

The Savanna defense limited Buena Park to only 21 first-half yards and 70 for the game. Stacy Strozier led the Rebel attack with 61 yards in 14 attempts and one score. Matt Stephenson added 35 yards and closed out the Savanna scoring with a three-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Buena Park quarterback Steve Lucas directed the Coyotes (0-3-1) to their only score midway through the fourth quarter, completing three straight passes for 42 yards, the last one an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jim Oyos. Savanna (3-1) won the game despite 12 penalties for 144 yards.

University 35, Laguna Hills 13--Craig Belle scored two touchdowns to lead the Trojans to the victory over the Hawks at Mission Viejo High. Belle rushed for 92 yards in 10 carries and David Liebke added 130 yards in 8 carries, including a 91-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Trojans (2-2) had 205 yards on the ground while holding the Hawks to 37 yards. University quarterback Jeff Bailey completed 6 of 8 passes for 95 yards.

The game included a third-quarter brawl in which three Laguna Hills players--quarterback Chris Leigber and running backs Mike Cotner and Phil Colquette--were ejected. Three University defensive players were also ejected after the skirmish, which followed a short gain by Colquette to the Trojan six-yard line.

Belle’s nine-yard touchdown run with 4:44 left in the second quarter gave University a 21-7 lead at halftime and his four-yard scamper with 45 seconds left in the third quarter gave the Trojans a commanding 35-7 lead.
