Bonds Hooks Up With Millner to Spark Hart Win Over Saugus, 41-13

Hart High rudely introduced its quarterback to the Saugus football team Friday night at College of the Canyons.

The name is Bonds, James Bonds. But you can call him Jim. Everybody else does.

Bonds wears number 7, not 007, but his right arm is licensed to kill opposing defenses, and he shot holes in the Saugus secondary, leading Hart to a 41-13 victory.

Bonds, who has been called the next coming of John Elway by one college recruiter, had a memorable night, passing for three touchdowns and scoring one himself. He completed 11 of 18 passes for 233 yards and was not intercepted.

When Bonds needed a big play, he went to wide receiver Bryan Millner, who caught 3 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. His receptions measured 71, 39 and 54 yards.

The 71-yarder broke a scoreless tie with four minutes left in the first period. Millner caught the ball at the Saugus 20, then whirled away from defender Gene Duggan and raced into the end zone.

The score was the first in nearly five quarters between the two schools, which fought to a 0-0 tie last season.

The Indians, who rushed for 176 yards, built their lead to 20-0 by halftime.

Bonds passed three yards to Chris Hite for the second touchdown, and Hart scored again late in the second period when Ralph Elliot intercepted a Jared Snyder pass and raced 53 yards to a touchdown.

Saugus finally got on the scoreboard early in the third period, Larmark Allen taking a swing pass from Snyder and going 46 yards for the touchdown. Balau Mulugeta’s point-after kick was wide, and the Centurions trailed, 20-6, with 11:19 left in the period.

The Indians came right back behind Bonds and fullback Andy Iacenda. Two Bonds completions, a seven-yard run by Hite and two Iacenda runs totaling 21 yards put the ball on the Saugus two. Bonds took it in from there, and Jim Harper added the kick, putting Hart up, 27-6.

Three minutes laters, Bonds hooked up with Millner for 54 yards to the Centurion one-yard line. He hit Hite in the end zone on the next play for his third touchdown pass.

Reserve tailback Derrick Piper tacked on Hart’s final touchdown, a four-yard run. Piper led all rushers with 50 yards on 7 carries.

Saugus scored again 44 seconds to play, Snyder connecting with Tom Green on a 15-yard touchdown pass.

The Centurions’ run-and-shoot offense misfired against Hart. Snyder completed only 14 of 35 passes for 135 yards and was intercepted twice.

Snyder’s main target was Allen, who caught 8 passes for 87 yards and the touchdown. Saugus rushed for just 71 yards on 17 carries.

The game was marred by 24 penalties. Hart was flagged 13 times for 110 yards. Saugus racked 99 yards in infractions.
