JC FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

(Ten former community college students were named to the California Community College Football coaches Assn. Hall of Fame recently. The 1986 inductees include two former Southeast/Long Beach area players and have been divided into five categories.)

PRE-1965 PLAYERS Don Burroughs Ventura College Played quarterback and defensive back in 1950.

Gary Lynn Garrison Long Beach CC At Millikan High School he also lettered in baseball and basketball.Played halfback for the Vikings during the 1962 and ’63 seasons. Switched to flanker at San Diego State where he set a school record for most yards receiving in a single season. Was named all-Pro several times as a member of the San Diego Chargers in the old American Football League.

James Earl (Jim) Johnson Santa Monica CC The top draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 1961. Was selected all-Pro four consecutive seasons. All Metropolitan Conference in football at Santa Monica in 1957 and ’58. Also a state JC track champion in the high hurdles

William Orland (Billy) Kilmer Citrus College A star quarterback at Citrus in 1957. Transferred to UCLA, where he was named all-American three straight years. Was drafted in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers. Later led the Washington Redskins to Super Bowl VII.

POST-1965 PLAYERS Clarence Davis East Los Angeles College A JC all-American in 1968 at ELAC, which, ironically, no longer has a football program. A two-time all-Pac 8 tailback at USC, he later played eight seasons with the Oakland Raiders and ranks as their No. 4 all-time rushing leader. He led the team in kickoff returns for three consecutive seasons.

Rod Martin Los Angeles CC A linebacker in 1973 and ’74. A co-captain on the Cubs’ state championship team in his sophomore year. A two-year starter at USC, he now plays for the Los Angeles Raiders. He was named the American Football Conference defensive player of the year in 1983 and set a Super Bowl record of three interceptions against Philadelphia in Super Bowl XV.

Nate Wright Monterey Peninsula CC An all-Coast Conference first team choice at both quarterback and defensive back in 1965 and ’66. Played at San Diego State and later with the Atlanta Falcons, St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings, where he played in three Super Bowls. Now a teacher in San Diego, Wright accumulated 28 interceptions in his pro career.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE COACH Clare Slaughter Fresno CC Was head coach of the Rams for 20 years beginning in 1959. His record was 136-61-6. He won four state titles and suffered just two losing seasons.

ALUMNI COACH Bill Walsh College of San Mateo The current coach of the San Francisco 49ers played two seasons for San Mateo in the early 1950’s. He was named NFL coach of the year in 1981 and ’84. He has won two Super Bowl titles. His record is 70-48.

CONTRIBUTOR Fred Baer JC Athletic Bureau A graduate of the College of San Mateo. Baer has been involved with JC football for 25 years. His JCAB newsletter began in 1962 and currently provides official statistics and records for all JC sports in California. His bureau serves all major California papers, including The Times, and is also circulated to USA Today, the Associated Press and United Press International news services, and other media outlets. He founded the Track and Field Writers of America, has done color commentary on track for ESPN and USA cable networks and has worked as a researcher for the major television networks at three Olympic Games.
