Wilbon Again on Receiving End as Santa Ana Beats Ocean View

Share

Royal Wilbon seems to be more of a scoring threat when he’s playing defensive cornerback than when he plays wide receiver.

For the second time this year, Wilbon, a Santa Ana junior, returned an interception for a touchdown, this time running 88 yards with the first of three interceptions Friday night to lead the Saints to a 22-17 victory over Ocean View at Westminster High.

“After I got that first one, I wanted to run them all back,” said Wilbon, who has five interceptions.

His third interception Friday, coming at the Santa Ana 6-yard line with 1:06 to play, ended an Ocean View rally.

“I’m getting tired of playing them tough and only getting close,” said Ocean View Coach Guy Corrozzo, who watched his team lose to St. Paul, 17-12, a week ago.

Richard Fanti threw touchdown passes to Efrain Islas and Julio Vargas to pace Santa Ana (4-1).

Kurt Szuba gained 107 yards on 21 carries for Ocean View (2-3). The Seahawks scored on an option pass from Victor Gutierrez to James Davis. But Ocean View had difficulty passing as quarterback Mike Spence was 5-for-13.
