STATISTICAL WATCH : Grant Quarterback Finally Receives Some Attention

Share

Michael Parker, the Grant quarterback who broke his collarbone before the season started, was tired of watching from the bench. “But he’s a good athlete, so I had to get him in there somewhere,” Coach Bill Foster said.

Parker entered Friday’s game at wide receiver. A few plays later, he made his first and only reception of the season, an 89-yard touchdown pass from backup Stephen Mack. . . . Birmingham quarterback Kevin Zietz, who passed for 11 touchdowns all last year, has thrown for eight in four games this season. . . . Ken Sollom of Canyon and Jim Bonds of Hart are in a close passing battle after five weeks:

PA PC I Pct Yds Avg TD Sollom 107 62 5 57.9 1100 17.7 11 Bonds 107 59 5 55.1 1004 17.0 12

Rushing: After five weeks, Crespi’s Russell White is the only Valley-area player to gain at least 100 yards rushing in each of his games. He has 773 total yards. His worst game was a 108-yard performance against Burbank. White had 163 yards against Santa Clara on 12 carries, causing his average to fall to 15.2 yards per carry. No one else in the Valley is over 8.6. In five games, Crespi’s opponents have totaled 500 yards--398 yards fewer than White’s combined rushing and receiving total. . . . Khalid Ali of Granada Hills, which has played only four games, gained at least 100 yards in each of his past three games. He fell just short in the opener, however, with 99 yards against Alemany.

Defense: Defense is the difference this season at Reseda High. The Regents are off to a 4-0 start and have allowed just 421 yards and 20 points. In Friday’s 7-6 win, Reseda allowed no run longer than 12 yards, and Westchester netted just 28 yards rushing on 23 attempts. . . . In Taft’s 7-6 loss last week to Franklin, the Taft defense limited running back Torace Ragland to 31 yards on 13 carries. In Franklin’s first three games, Ragland had gained 517 yards on 59 attempts.
