FOOTBALL : CSUN-Cal Lutheran Battle Left Linemen With Lots of Lumps

Brian Manley and Don Tucker, starters on the right side of the Cal State Northridge offensive line, will miss Saturday night’s game against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Tucker, a 6-7, 275-pound tackle, sprained his knee last Saturday against Cal Lutheran and will be out at least two weeks. Manley, a 6-2, 250-pound guard broke his leg and is out for the season. Bob Kistner will replace Manley and Louis Murino will play for Tucker.

Todd Leavens, Mike Miller and John Hynes of Cal Lutheran missed practice Tuesday. Leavens, a senior free safety, has a bruised thigh. Miller, a senior defensive tackle, has a sore ankle. Hynes, another tackle, is “sore all over,” according to Coach Bob Shoup. All three defensive players are expected to play this week.

Cal Lutheran linebacker Terry Rowe, who was injured in the Kingsmen’s loss at San Luis Obispo two weeks ago, underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee Friday in Phoenix, Ariz., and is out for the season.

Bonds bounds back: Junior quarterback Tom Bonds will start for Cal Lutheran against Santa Clara on Saturday, Kingsmen Coach Bob Shoup said. The Kingsmen have lost three straight with the All-American watching from the sidelines because of a sprained knee.

Danny Fernandez is likely to make his second start at quarterback when 16th-ranked Cal State Northridge plays Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Saturday night at North Campus Stadium.

Fernandez had alternated with Chris Parker in the Matadors’ nonconference games, but it was Parker who started CSUN’s first two WFC games. Parker has been ineffective in his last two starts, a 49-29 loss to Southern Utah State and a 17-3 win over Cal Lutheran in which he completed 3 of 7 passes for 27 yards and one interception.

Fernandez played the second and fourth quarters against Cal Lutheran and completed all four of his passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. All of the Matadors’ points came with Fernandez directing the offense.

Hankering to start: Freshman Barry Hanks has put to rest all thoughts of a quarterback controversy at Valley College.

In his first start as the replacement for injured Josh Davis, Hanks passed for 387 yards and four touchdowns to lead Valley to its first victory of the season, 50-21, over Harbor on Saturday.

Hanks earned the start over freshman John Watkins by passing for 232 yards and a touchdown in only one quarter against College of the Desert two weeks ago. Valley, however, lost, 44-30.
