Community Colleges to Study Drug Abuse

A task force designed to investigate drug abuse within California community college intercollegiate athletic programs was established Thursday on the final day of the state Commission on Athletics convention in Costa Mesa.

The task force is expected to research the extent of drug use among athletes and to assist school administrators in resolving the problem, said Walt Rilliet, athletic commissioner for community colleges.

Teresa Hughes, chair of the Assembly Committee on Education, was one of three speakers to address athletic administrators on drug abuse at the two-day conference.

Hughes was joined by Pete Lango, a physical education teacher and coach at Bakersfield College, who reviewed a study he is completing on drug abuse prevention programs at colleges and universities throughout the country. John Downer, dean of students at Taft College, reported on the progress of a drug-testing program implemented this year at his school.
