Giants Get Sacked by Seahawks, 17-12 : Simms Goes Down 7 Times and Throws 4 Interceptions in Loss

Everyone was wondering where the front line of the Seattle Seahawks went.

Quarterback Phil Simms of the New York Giants found out Sunday when the Seahawks sacked him seven times and pressured him into four interceptions in a 17-12 victory over the Giants.

“You get so much bad stuff written about you and talked about you and it bothered the guys,” said end Jacob Green, who had a club-record four sacks. “As a team, we never doubted each other at all.”

Seattle had a team-record 61 sacks in 1985, but had only 9 in 6 games this season.

Probably more important than the sacks, the pass rush contributed two crucial interceptions of Simms passes in the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks (5-2) were leading, 10-9, when linebacker Bruce Scholtz picked off a Simms pass and returned it 10 yards to the New York 19. Seattle scored five plays later on Curt Warner’s one-yard run.

The Giants (5-2) drove 76 yards in 12 plays and Raul Allegre kicked a 31-yard field goal to cut Seattle’s lead to five points.

New York reached the Seattle 22 with 1:25 left, but Dave Brown intercepted Simms’ pass intended for Solomon Miller on the 10 and the Seahawks ran out the clock. Brown’s second interception of the game was the 48th interception of his career, second only to Donnie Shell of Pittsburgh (49) among active players.

“We just made mistakes,” Simms said. “We got close but couldn’t do anything. We thought we could pound it out and run at them, but we just didn’t put enough plays together.”

Simms hit on 14 of 25 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. Joe Morris added 116 yards rushing in 24 carries, but it wasn’t enough.

Seattle’s Steve Largent caught two passes to run his NFL-leading pass-catching streak to 130 games. He has 650 career receptions, passing Charley Taylor’s 649 for second on the all-time list.

Seattle quarterback Dave Krieg was 15 of 22 for 166 yards with a touchdown. Warner was limited to 56 yards in 19 carries.
