PREP FOOTBALL : South Coast League : Mission Viejo Dominates San Clemente in Shutout

Mission Viejo High School got its third consecutive shutout Thursday night, and fourth in five games, as the Diablos defeated San Clemente, 10-0, in South Coast League action at Mission Viejo High School.

San Clemente (0-2, 3-4) had only one serious scoring threat, which was aided by two pass-interference calls against the Diablo secondary. But the Tritons failed to score on four tries from the 12-yard line and with 5:18 left Mission Viejo (2-0, 4-3) took over on downs and ran the clock out.

Mission Viejo dominated the first half with two long drives that resulted in the game’s only scores.

The second started on the Mission Viejo eight-yard line after a San Clemente punt early in the second quarter.

Senior running back Darrin Sweazy carried the ball 8 times on the 14-play drive for 41 yards. The drive’s other big gain was a 32-yard pass from quarterback Tony Arnone to senior wide receiver Rick Angle.

The Diablos finally stalled at the Triton 15 after having the ball for more than six minutes and sophomore Eric Ekdahl kicked a 32-yard field goal to put Mission Viejo ahead, 10-0, with 4:21 left in the second quarter.

Sweazy finished with 103 yards in 23 carries.

Mission Viejo had taken a 7-0 lead on its first possession when Sweazy scored on a six-yard run to complete a 66-yard drive. Arnone dominated the drive, rushing for 46 yards, including a 33-yard run.
