College Roundup : UC Irvine Third in Cross-Country Meet

UC Irvine’s cross-country ‘B’ teams placed third in men’s and women’s competition of the Green and Gold Invitational at Cal Poly Pomona.

The UCI men’s team tied UCLA for third with 123 points. The San Diego Track Club finished first with 100.

UCI’s Scott La Force, a freshman, was the Anteaters’ top runner, placing 17th with a time of 25:27 over the 8,000-meter course. Dan Rattary (25:46) was 22nd and Mike Wall (25:52) 24th.

UCI’s Judy McLaughlin placed fourth to lead the Anteater women to a third-place finish with 108 points. UCLA won the women’s division with 44 points and Cal State Los Angeles was second with 86.

McLaughlin ran 17:39 for the 5,000 meters. UCI’s Becki Van Zant (18:00) was ninth.

In other cross-country action:

Chapman 22, Christ College Irvine 34--Ray Campbell ran a 27:11 over five miles to lead Chapman. The victory was the Panthers’ third straight.

In water polo:

UC Irvine 6, UC Santa Barbara 3--Sophomores Dan Smoot and Kevin Wood, who scored two goals each, led the Anteaters to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory at Santa Barbara.

The No. 7-ranked Anteaters (6-1, 10-8) are second in the PCAA. UCSB, ranked No. 8 nationally, is 5-2 and 14-7.

Loyola 11, Chapman 2--John Bristol and Terrell Thurston scored for Chapman at Orange High School. Bristol has scored 68 goals in 23 games for the Panthers (3-21). Chapman goalie Carter Moe made a season-high 13 saves.

In men’s soccer:

Master’s 8, Christ College Irvine 0--Chris Bingham scored four goals and Allen Jennings three for Master’s (5-8-1) at Irvine. Master’s goalie Doug Boyd had 12 saves. Christ College (4-5) goalie Mark Lofink had 19 saves.

In women’s soccer:

Chapman 5, Occidental 1--Darcy Calkins and Diana Harris each scored scored two goals for Chapman at Occidental. Freshman Shelly Williams scored the Panthers’ other goal. The victory broke an eight-game losing streak for Chapman (4-11-1).
