Valley College has been on a tear lately. After dropping its first three games this season, the Monarchs have come back and won three in a row, all by a combined score of 87-28.

San Bernardino Valley was the latest victim as the Monarchs held off a late rally to win, 21-14, Saturday night in a Southern California Conference game at Valley.

The Indians were their own worst enemy, turning the ball over twice inside Valley’s 10-yard line and piling up 135 yards in penalties.

“Our defense really came through tonight,” Valley Coach Chuck Ferrero said. “We got some turnovers early in the game that killed their confidence.”

But Valley quarterback Barry Hanks drove some nails of his own into the Indians’ coffin, completing 16 of 30 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown.

Valley, which piled up 397 yards in total offense, scored on its first two possessions.

The Monarchs went up 21-0 at the half after Hanks connected with running back Bartley Hornback on a 19-yard touchdown pass.

In the second half, the Indians came back, relying on the strong throwing of quarterback Jim Bees and the running of Taylor Cooper.

Cooper put the Indians on the board with a 90-yard punt return late in the third quarter.

Bees, who completed 18 of 30 passes for 253 yards, then pulled the Indians to within seven points on a 51-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Turner.

Valley is 3-3 over, 3-1 in conference. San Bernardino is 2-5, 1-4 in conference.
