Last week, Miami Dolphins tackle Greg Koch, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, said of the difference in clothing styles: “Well, people dress well in Miami. In Green Bay, you had a great wardrobe if you had 10 bowling shirts.”

The next day, a couple of disc jockeys in Appleton, Wis., sent Koch 130 bowling shirts and a bowling ball.

“Here, Greg,” they wrote. “Take a fashion risk. Wear one of these and jump off a cliff.”

New York Mets Manager Davey Johnson was involved in a car accident before Game 6 of the World Series. Johnson said a car came out of an underground garage Friday night and hit the back of the vehicle in which he was riding. Johnson, who was a passenger, said his car spun around.

Trivia Time: Lou Cordileone is the answer to what trivia question? (Answer below.)

5 Years Ago Today: On Oct. 28, 1981, the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees, 9-2, to win the World Series in six games. Pedro Guerrero went 3 for 5, including a home run and a triple, and knocked in five runs to lead the Dodgers.

Ted Williams, asked about all the young sluggers in the American League, told George Vecsey of the New York Times that he liked “that kid in California,” meaning Wally Joyner.

“He has a chance to be better than any of them,” Williams said. “He gets his hips ahead of his hands better than anybody.”

Now-it-can-be-told Dept.: USC safety Tim McDonald told the San Jose Mercury News that the Trojans got added incentive when they watched John Paye and other Stanford players tell how they were going to take USC apart Friday night on a Bay Area TV show.

Of USC’s 10-0 win, McDonald said, “Not only did we get a shutout, we got a shutup.”

St. Mary’s tailback Don Schoenhofer was a guest at the Bay Area football writers’ luncheon after a game in which he gained 146 yards in only 12 carries, scored 2 touchdowns, caught 3 passes for 39 yards and threw a 70-yard touchdown pass.

“He did everything but line the field,” the emcee said.

Wrong.

Said the NCAA News: “The day before the game, Schoenhofer indeed had been out lining the field at St. Mary’s Stadium (in Moraga).”

Trivia Answer: He was the defensive tackle acquired by the San Francisco 49ers in the infamous deal that sent quarterback Y.A. Tittle to the New York Giants before the 1961 season. Tittle proceeded to lead the Giants to three straight NFL Eastern Conference titles.
