Share

Canyon High extended its winning streak to 45 by defeating Burroughs of Ridgecrest, 35-3, and will attempt to tie the Southern Section record against Quartz Hill on Friday. Temple City won 46 straight from 1969-73. The state record is 47 by Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa in 1972-77. Douglass of Oklahoma City set the national record of 76 from 1949-56.

Passing: Ken Sollom of Canyon remains the Valley-area passing leader with 1,587 yards. . . . Birmingham quarterback Kevin Zietz, who was intercepted only five times in his first five games, threw three in the Braves’ 20-19 loss to Chatsworth. . . . Canoga Park’s Jeremy Mears has made 12 of his 13 receptions in the past two games. . . . Canoga Park quarterback Jeff Myers, who averaged only 7.1 yards per completion through five games, averaged 12.4 yards in his 15 completions against Van Nuys. . . . Ty Leatherman, a sophomore quarterback for Campbell Hall’s eight-man team, has thrown for 701 yards and 8 touchdowns in his past two games against Pilgrim and the Brentwood junior varsity. His favorite target has been receiver Tim Jensen, who has caught 23 passes for 588 yards and 5 touchdowns in the two games. Leatherman could be the man to watch if Campbell Hall upgrades to play a complete varsity schedule next year. . . . Although he doesn’t pile up the big numbers, Jeremy Leach of Granada Hills continues to be one of the most effective quarterbacks in the area. He completed 8 of 9 passes for 124 yards Friday to raise his completion percentage to 67.4%. His NCAA passing efficiency rating would be 177.3 for the season. . . . The Ice-Bag Award goes to the arm of Jared Snyder of Saugus who threw 43 passes last week, completing only 8 for 83 yards.

Rushing: Taft ran for 330 yards and 5 touchdowns against Monroe on Friday. Donald Dozier carried 19 times for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Cornell Collier gained 98 yards on 14 attempts. . . . Henry completed 7 of 9 passes for 119 yards and 3 touchdowns, and rushed 8 times for 105 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown run. . . . Russell White, with 1,216 yards and 18 touchdowns in 7 games is running away with the Valley scoring lead but has a long way to go to reach the Southern Section record of 37 touchdowns set by Paul Hewitt of Monrovia in 1983. White, a sophomore, broke the Crespi season record of 1,193 yards, set by Willie Curran in 1977. . . . Khalid Ali of Granada Hills, who is averaging 7.9 yards per carry (second only in the Valley to White’s incredible 15.0) is just 17 yards and 1 touchdown behind Cleveland’s Albert Fann for the area City Section lead.
