Kennedy Wins State Light-Heavyweight Boxing Title
Glen Kennedy of Covina earned a split decision over Mike Sedillo of Chino to win the vacant California light-heavyweight championship Thursday in the main event on the Irvine Marriott boxing card.
There were were no knockdowns in the bout that saw Kennedy, at 173 pounds, using a body attack to build an early lead that Sedillo, 175 pounds, was unable to overcome.
Referee Pat Connelly and Judge Lou Filippo each scored the bout 115-114 for Kennedy, while judge Chuck Hassett had it 116-113 for Sedillo.
Kennedy (14-3) knocked out John Smith in his last appearence at Irvine. Sedillo (16-4), who won the light-heavyweight tournament at the Forum in 1984, came into the fight as a slight favorite.
