Roundup : San Dieguito Rushes Past Orange Glen

San Dieguito High School running backs Greg August and Mark Horowitz and a clutch defense keyed the Mustangs’ 21-13 Palomar League victory at Orange Glen Friday night.

August, who had 140 yards on 19 carries, scored on a 60-yard run halfway through the first quarter for San Dieguito’s first touchdown. Horowitz, 117 yards on 18 carries, broke through the middle to score from 37 yards out to make the score 21-7 with a minute to play in the game.

San Dieguito remains undefeated in the league at 4-0 and 7-1 overall. Orange Glen fell to 1-3, 5-3 overall.

Orange Glen quarterback Duffy Daugherty completed 25 of 46 passes for 349 yards.

However, as the first half ended, Horowitz, playing defensive back, intercepted a Daugherty pass at the goal line.

Daugherty hit wide receiver Scott Carlovsky, who caught 10 passes for 137 yards, for a 17-yard score. With seven seconds left in the game, Carlovsky caught a 26-yard touchdown pass to bring the Patriots.

Vista 14, Mt. Carmel 10--Mt. Carmel carried a 10-0 lead into the fourth period, but top-ranked Vista (5-0, 8-0) fought back for the win at Mt. Carmel. Billy Faraimo scored twice on one-yard runs, the second coming after Mt. Carmel (1-3, 3-5) turned the ball over on the its own one on a bad snap on a punt. Vista’s Tommy Booker, the county’s leading rusher going into the game, ran for 110 yards in 19 carries.

San Marcos 28, Ramona 0--Jim Jennings rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries to lead San Marcos (4-1, 4-3-1) past visiting Ramona (0-4, 0-8). Jennings scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter and a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Rick Ebert scored San Marcos’ first touchdown on a 7-yard run in the first quarter. Abel Neri’s 32-yard interception return closed the scoring in the third quarter.

CITY CENTRAL Crawford 36, San Diego 15--Dewey Brown caught seven passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns to lead Crawford (3-0, 5-3) over San Diego (0-3, 2-6) at Patrick Henry High. Brown scored on a 22-yard reception from David Edrozo in the second quarter and a 7-yard pass from Keith Gilbert in the fourth quarter. Ivory Randle’s one-yard touchdown run for Crawford snapped an 8-8 tie in the second quarter.

CITY EASTERN Madison 13, Morse 0--Madison’s defense limited Morse to 114 yards of total offense and 8 yards passing, and Gerald Harris scored on a 10-yard run with an interception return in the fourth quarter as the Warhawks (2-1, 5-3) defeated visiting Morse (1-1-1, 4-3-1). Harris’ interception return was his fourth for a touchdown this season. Madison took a 6-0 lead midway through the third quarter on a nine-yard option pass from Jimmie Robinson to Olun Graves.

Point Loma 34, Serra 0--Darrell Armstead scored twice and Hobie Tillman ran 35 yards for a touchdown with a blocked punt to lead Point Loma (1-1-1, 5-2-1) at home against Serra. Armstead scored both of his touchdowns in the first half as Point Loma built a 27-0 lead. The Pointers’ defense held Serra (1-2, 2-6) to 12 yards rushing and 61 yards of total offense in the game.

Mira Mesa 42, Patrick Henry 7--Essex Burton rushed for 241 yards in 19 carries, including three touchdowns, to pace No. 10 Mira Mesa (3-0, 6-2) at home. Burton scored on an 80-yard run late in the first period. Mira Mesa’s Andre Falkquay intercepted a pass by Patrick Henry quarterback Lance Lowery late in the third period and ran 70 yards for the score. Patrick Henry is 0-3, 0-8.

CITY WESTERN Clairemont 24, Kearny 21--Cercey Moore intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown with three minutes remaining to wrap up the win for Clairemont (1-2, 1-7) at Mesa College. Moore’s interception gave Clairemont a 24-14 lead. Kearny is 1-2, 3-5.

La Jolla 14, USDHS 7--Doug Powell’s four-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Raulston with 11 minutes left provided the winning margin as No. 7 USDHS was upset at USD. The play was set up by a 25-yard interception return by Thom Porter. USDHS (2-1, 7-1) led 7-0 on a one-yard run by Martin Correia. However, USDHS had to play most of the game without the injured James Wilson, the county’s seventh-ranked rusher. La Jolla tied the game, 7-7, on Powell’s two-yard touchdown pass to Brad Raulston. La Jolla (3-0, 7-1) moved into first place.

GROSSMONT 3A Mount Miguel 21, Monte Vista 0--Mount Miguel (2-0, 6-2) turned two Monte Vista turnovers into touchdowns in the first half and went on to win is fifth straight game. Quarterback Anthony Rivera, who missed Mount Miguel’s first five games with a separated shoulder, threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Raymond Roberts after Monte Vista (0-2, 4-4) fumbled on its opening drive. Another turnover enabled Mount Miguel to score on a five-yard run by Charlie Ray and take a 14-0 lead at the half. Rivera added a touchdown on a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter. Helix 14, Granite Hills 7--Quarterback Tim Zeddies scored from the one-yard line with 9:14 left to give Helix (3-0, 6-1-1) the victory. Todd Sheehan had scored on a reverse in the first quarter to give Helix a 7-0 lead at halftime. Granite Hills (1-2, 5-3) tied the game on a one-yard touchdown run by Tom Vardell early in the third quarter. Vardell set up the score with a 45-yard run. Granite Hills, the defending league champion, took over on its own 13 with 4:16 left and moved the ball to the Helix 7 with just 35 seconds remaining. However, Loren Wallace sacked Granite Hills quarterback Donnie Carroll to end the game.

GROSSMONT 2A El Capitan 27, El Cajon 13--Brian Palmer ran for touchdowns of 11, 2 and 24 yards to lead El Capitan (2-0, 3-5) over visiting El Cajon (0-2, 2-6). Teammate Kurt Wilkins also scored on a 50-yard run. After being held scoreless through three quarters, El Cajon scored twice as quarterback John West threw touchdown passes of 7 yards to Jim Dutra and 15 yards to Jesse Pomintuan.

METRO MESA Montgomery 14, Hilltop 13--Troy Beale threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Cesar Perez late in the fourth quarter to give Montgomery (2-1, 5-2-1) a come-from-behind win over visiting Hilltop (0-3, 2-6). Henry Negrette kicked a 42-yard field goal for Hilltop, which later scored 10 points when Jim Noble tackled Beale in the end zone for a safety and then ran back the ensuing free kick 70 yards for a touchdown.

METRO SOUTH BAY Castle Park 27, Mar Vista 16--Castle Park (2-0, 3-5) took advantage of three Mar Vista (0-2, 2-5-1) turnovers to gain the win at home. The win sets up the Castle Park-Southwest showdown next week for the league title. Castle Park had a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cesar Gutierrez to John Stanton and touchdown runs of 2 yards by David Carpenter, 4 by Loren McMahon and 7 by Cricket Carpenter.

NONLEAGUE Grossmont 32, Santana 6--Eric Webb kicked a 48-yard field goal as Grossmont (4-3-1) raced to a 32-0 lead at Santana (1-6). Ray Bassi scored for Grossmont on an 11-yard pass from Mark Stillwell. Grossmont’s Eric Batson, Zack Kinsfather and Rusty Beatty all ran for touchdowns.
