Pacific 10 Roundup : Muster Leads Stanford Over Washington State

Stanford fullback Brad Muster rushed for 184 yards and had 93 yards receiving as the Cardinal defeated Washington State, 42-12, in a Pacific 10 game Saturday at Stanford.

“A little too much Muster and too much Stanford and not enough Washington State,” Cougar Coach Jim Walden said. “I feel in my heart this football team has kind of quit.”

Muster broke Ernie Nevers’ 61-year Stanford record of 34 carries in a game, set in the 1925 Rose Bowl, by carrying 36 times.

Stanford quarterback John Paye ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw to Jeff James for another, while completing 17 of 25 passes for 214 yards as the Cardinal boosted their record to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10.

The Cougars (3-4-1, 2-3-1) were held to 296 total yards. Stanford gained 500.

Oregon 27, California 9--At Berkeley, Chris Miller ran for two touchdowns, the first immediately after breaking the Ducks’ career record for passing yardage, and also threw a touchdown pass.

Ed Hulbert intercepted three passes for Oregon, which ended a six-game losing streak and is 3-6 and 1-5. Cal, which had four turnovers, is 1-7 and 1-5.

Miller passed for 197 yards, making his four-year total 6,127, which breaks Dan Fouts’ school record of 5,995 yards. Miller set the record in the second quarter with a 54-yard completion to split end Terry Obee. On the next play, Miller ran nine yards for Oregon’s first touchdown.
