Far West Roundup : Utah Breaks Winless Streak by Surprising Colorado State, 38-28

Larry Egger passed 258 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead previously winless Utah past Colorado State, 38-28, Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference game at Salt Lake City.

The Utes (1-7 overall, 1-5 in the WAC) struck first on a 71-yard pass interception return by Clarence Fields, and built a 17-7 halftime lead on Egger’s passing.

Egger completed 20 of 31 passes. He hit Craig McEwen on scoring passes of 7 and 5 yards, and connected with Eddie Johnson on a 49-yard scoring play.

Utah also got a 1-yard plunge by Gerald Johnson and a 47-yard field goal by Scott Lieber.

Steve Bartalo rushed for 181 yards in 35 carries and scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards for Colorado State (5-4, 3-3). Bartalo has 4,501 yards, 11th best in NCAA history.

Tulsa 34, New Mexico 27--Quarterback Steve Gage accounted for 421 yards and ran for 2 touchdowns in the fourth quarter to lead the Golden Hurricane at Albuquerque, N.M.

Tulsa (7-3) trailed, 20-19, in the final period before Gage scored on runs of 1 and 40 yards. Gage rushed for 212 yards in 25 carries and completed 13 of 22 passes for 209 yards. He has 5,337 yards in career total offense, breaking the school record of 5,104 set by Jerry Rhome in 1964.

New Mexico (3-7) closed the scoring on Ned James’ one-yard scoring run. James completed 18 of 24 for passes for 222 yards and had 22 carries for 92 yards.

Wyoming 41, Texas El Paso 12--Sophomore Craig Burnett threw for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns, leading the Cowboys to a WAC victory over the Miners at Laramie, Wyo.

Burnett completed 26 of 41 attempts, including scoring passes of 5, 10, 25 and 6 yards.

The Cowboys (6-4, 4-2) also scored on a 10-yard run by Gerald Abraham and a 1-yard run by Darrel Perkins against UTEP (2-8, 0-6).
