East Roundup : Pitt Loses Control and Miami Wins

Pittsburgh had Vinny Testaverde under control, but the Panthers didn’t count on David Kintigh.

Kintigh returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown late in the first half and, before it was over, top-ranked Miami had a 37-10 victory over Pitt in the rain at Pittsburgh.

“I really think the big play for us was the punt return,” Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson said. “We called timeout right before it, because we thought we had an opportunity to either block a punt or return one. We wanted to get a touchdown before the half, and our guys did a good job of blocking for Kintigh.”

Kintigh’s scoring run gave Miami (9-0) a 14-3 lead with 55 seconds left in the half, and Testaverde took it from there, throwing for three second-half touchdowns.

The Panthers (4-4-1), going to the running game without injured quarterback John Congemi, appeared to be wearing Miami down until Kintigh’s return. They never threatened again until Craig Heyward, who rushed for 254 yards, scored on a 16-yard run with 3:37 left.

Testaverde finished 17 of 26 for 291 yards, 4 touchdowns and an interception. He was 10 of 12 for 172 yards in the second half.

Boston College 38, Temple 29--Shawn Halloran and Troy Stradford were too much for Paul Palmer to overcome as the Eagles won their fifth straight game by defeating the Owls at Philadelphia.

Halloran completed 22 of 36 for 311 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Eagles (6-3) scored on 5 of their first 6 possessions.

Stradford gained 140 yards in 13 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 67 and 10 yards.

Palmer, the nation’s leading rusher and all-purpose runner, gained 212 yards in 38 carries and scored twice for Temple (5-4). He also passed for another score.

Syracuse 31, Navy 22--Scott Schwedes returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown and caught an 18-yard scoring pass as the Orangemen turned back the Midshipmen at Syracuse, N.Y.

Schwedes put the Orangemen (4-5) in front, 10-7, at 2:02 of the second quarter with his third career punt return for a touchdown. Schwedes, who set up another score with a 43-yard punt return, finished with 135 yards in punt returns and another 68 yards in receiving.

Bill Byrne passed for two touchdowns for Navy (3-6).

Holy Cross 17, Bucknell 10--Gordon Lockbaum scored two touchdowns, including the tiebreaker late in the fourth quarter, as the undefeated Crusaders won the inaugural Colonial League championship with a victory at Worcester, Mass.

Lockbaum rushed for 94 yards, including scores of 1 and 3 yards, and caught 7 passes for 81 yards as Holy Cross went to 9-0 for the first time.

Bucknell (3-6) had minus 46 yards rushing in the rain and mud. The sloppy conditions were almost as tough on the Crusaders, who fumbled nine times, losing two, and were intercepted three times.

Penn 42, Lafayette 14--Rich Comizio ran for 132 yards and a touchdown in 23 carries to set a school career rushing mark as the undefeated Quakers won in a romp at Philadelphia.

Comizio increased his career rushing yardage to 2,185, passing Adolph Bellizeare’s mark of 2,155 set from 1972-74.

Jim Bruni and Chris Flynn each had a pair of scoring runs for Penn (8-0), which battered Lafayette (5-4) with 357 yards rushing.

Army 21, Air Force 11--Quarterback Tory Crawford ran for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Cadets upset the Falcons in the fog at West Point, N.Y.

Crawford set up the Cadets’ first touchdown with a 65-yard run, ran 1 yard for a score in the second quarter and scored from the 3 to clinch the victory for Army (4-5) with 53 seconds left.

The Falcons (6-3) had a chance to tie the game with 7:06 left, but Chris Blasy missed a 27-yard field goal.

Army players wore guerrilla-style camouflage makeup on their faces in a motivational ploy by Coach Jim Young.

West Virginia 24, Rutgers 17--Undra Johnson scored on touchdown runs of 29 and 4 yards in the fourth quarter as the Mountaineers snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the Scarlet Knights at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Mountaineers (3-6) were trailing, 17-10, when Mike Timko replaced injured Ben Reed at quarterback and led West Virginia on its two scoring drives, capped by Johnson’s runs.

Rutgers (5-3-1) trailed, 10-6, at halftime, but took the lead on a 49-yard field goal by Doug Giesler and a 3-yard scoring run by Matt Prescott that was followed by a two-point conversion.

Dartmouth 41, Columbia 0--David Gabianelli passed for 2 touchdowns and ran for another, and Ernie Torain rushed for 141 yards and 2 scores at Hanover, N.H., as the Indians (2-6) handed the Lions their 29th straight defeat.

Columbia (0-8) is five short of Northwestern’s NCAA Division I record of 34 straight losses.

Cornell 15, Yale 0--Marty Stallone connected with Chris Hahn on a 41-yard touchdown pass play, and Tom Aug added three field goals as the Big Red (7-1, 5-0) turned back the Elis (2-6, 1-4) at Ithaca, N.Y., and moved into a tie with Penn for the Ivy League lead.

Massachusetts 17, Harvard 7--Al Neri rushed for a career-high 132 yards and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to clinch the Minutemen’s victory over the Crimson at Boston.

Colgate 27, Brown 3--Kenny Gamble slogged through the mud 43 times for 166 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Red Raiders (3-6) pounded the Bruins (4-4) at Providence, R.I.
