AROUND THE WFC : Kevin Johnson Goes on Record Tear at Portland State

Kevin Johnson set a Portland State season rushing record last Saturday, but in the process suffered an injury that ended his season.

Johnson tore a knee ligament on the carry that gave him a school-record 902 yards rushing. Johnson was third in the conference in rushing yardage and had gone over 100 yards in six consecutive games before last week.

Tom Bonds of Cal Lutheran and Tom Carey of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo were named Western Football Conference players of the week.

Bonds completed a conference-record 31 passes in 55 attempts for 353 yards and 3 touchdowns. It was the fourth such record of his career. Carey, a defensive lineman, made 12 tackles--eight solo--as San Luis Obispo handed Cal State Sacramento its first conference loss.

Cal Lutheran freshman Cary Grant set a conference record with 12 receptions against Southern Utah. Grant had 136 yards receiving and a touchdown. He also rushed for 40 yards and one touchdown on eight carries.

Portland State’s Chris Crawford, the WFC’s top passer, completed 19 of 35 passes for 362 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 41-14 win over Santa Clara last Saturday. He has not thrown an interception in his last 151 attempts. . . . Greg Calcagno of Santa Clara, second in the conference in passing yards, suffered through one of the worst games of his career last Saturday, throwing four interceptions. . . . Cal Lutheran linebacker Torii Lehr recorded 25 tackles in a loss to Southern Utah State. . . . Reggie Wauls of Northridge made 13 tackles--seven solo--against UC Davis. He has 31 in the last two games.

St. Mary’s will play host to Santa Clara on Saturday in the annual “Little Big Game.” The rivalry between the Bay Area Catholic colleges dates to 1896, when they met in rugby. Santa Clara won the rugby game, 46-4, and leads the football series, 23-19-1.
