Anaheim High School used a ball-control offense and an opportunistic defense to surprise La Habra, 19-0, in a Southern Section Central Conference quarterfinal playoff game Friday night in Glover Stadium at Anaheim.

With the victory, the Colonists (8-4) advance to meet Bolsa Grande in the conference semifinals next week.

Anaheim played an almost flawless game against La Habra, with running back Joaquin Garcia and quarterback Ernest Johnston leading the Colonists’ attack.

Garcia rushed for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns in 25 carries, helping the Colonists retain control of the ball.

La Habra’s defense hit hard, but was tired by the end of the game because it was on the field for much of the game.

Anaheim’s defense came up with the big turnover when it needed it--and occasionally when it didn’t. The Colonist defenders intercepted three La Habra passes and recovered three fumbles.

The defense set up Anaheim’s first touchdown.

On La Habra’s second play from scrimmage, Anaheim linebacker Jeff Bell intercepted a Matt Shackelford pass at the Highlander 30-yard line, returning it 15 yards.

Three plays later, Garcia scored on an eight-yard burst. The score remained 7-0 until late in third quarter, when Bell set up another score.

This time, he recovered a Shackelford fumble off a sack at La Habra’s 34-yard line. Five plays later, Garcia scored on a seven-yard run.

Anaheim’s final touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard pass from Johnston to Robert Ferrington.

Johnston completed 5 of 11 passes for 85 yards.

La Habra finished its season with a 7-4 record.
