COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Master’s Drops 4th Straight

Share

Forward Michael Parks scored 26 points and Tex Ceasar added 23 to lead Wayland Baptist to a 98-70 nonconference victory Friday night over Master’s.

Wayland Baptist (6-1), which came into the game ranked seventh in the NAIA, hit 69% of its field goals. The Master’s (0-4), which made 63 percent of its field goals in the first half, hit only 30% in the closing period as visiting Wayland Baptist pulled away.

Master’s Coach Randy Stem, who saw a similar scenario unfold four nights before as his team lost to UC Riverside (ranked 15th in Division II), was awed by Wayland Baptist’s shooting performance.

“They just shot the lights out,” he said. “They shot 6 for 7 on their three-point attempts, and that’s hard to defend. And then when we would try to press them from outside, they would just lob it in to their big guys and they would score on us.”

The Master’s, which used its hot shooting to stay within five points at halftime, was led by Pete Coeler, a 6-4 senior forward. He scored 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Phil Hahn added 20 points.
