In a game that had all the style and subtlety of a prison riot Friday night, Burroughs defeated Lompoc, 36-7, in a Northwestern Conference quarterfinal at Memorial Field in Burbank.

While the win Friday was easy, the way Burroughs ran up the score left Lompoc looking for a quick escape. Burroughs battered the Braves’ defense throughout the game, with running back Danny Cusumano scoring three touchdowns and quarterback Jeff Barrett passing for 294 yards and a pair of touchdowns to receiver Pat Lynch.

Burroughs (10-1-1) will face top-ranked Temple City (12-0) in Friday’s semifinals. Temple City defeated Schurr, 45-7.

When Burroughs wasn’t abusing Lompoc (8-4), it was hurting itself, taking 170 yards in penalties.

The game was marred by two fights in the fourth quarter as Burroughs continued to pass despite the lopsided score. Even with his team leading, 30-7, Burroughs Coach Bob Dunivant continued to call Barrett’s number. Barrett threw seven of his 23 passes in the final period, long after the outcome was settled.

When Dunivant crossed the field after the game, a Lompoc assistant yelled, “I hope you guys got enough points.”

Dunivant chose to ignore it.

“Who said football was nice?” he snapped when asked if his team was running up the score. “Do you have to be a nice person to play football?

“I got beat, 30-6, down in Lompoc, and nobody there was nice. We scored nine points in this half. Big deal.”

Cusumano started the Burroughs landslide with a six-yard run early in the first period. Burroughs scored on its next possession when Barrett hit Lynch with a 62-yard touchdown, giving the Indians a 13-0 lead.

Barrett later hit Lynch with a 28-yard touchdown to cap a 98-yard drive and give Burroughs a 27-0 halftime lead.

Barrett came out firing in the second half, and after Lompoc scored its lone touchdown on a two-yard run by Jake Brown, Barrett continued to put the ball in the air.

Lompoc had had enough of getting kicked around. After Burroughs led, 30-7, a bench-clearing brawl ensued on the following kickoff. Two Burroughs players and three from Lompoc were ejected.

But that wasn’t the worst of the body count for the Braves, who also had two players driven off the field by ambulances.

Burroughs scored last with 48 seconds left in the game on an eight-yard run by Cusumano, who scored three touchdowns on 14 carries.

Burroughs has scored 195 points in its last five games.
