BRIEFLY : Back Injury Sidelines Wilson at Pepperdine

Marty Wilson, suffering from a back injury, will be sidelined indefinitely from playing with the Pepperdine men’s basketball team.

Wilson, a 6-5 guard from Simi Valley, was projected as the starting point guard for the Waves, who open their 1986-87 season tonight at home against Oklahoma State. Wilson is one of only four lettermen on the Pepperdine team.

Wilson suffered a disc injury doing aerobic exercises the day before official team practice began Oct. 15. He has not practiced since Nov. 12. Wilson could be lost until the West Coast Athletic Conference season begins in January.

Wilson, a junior, was most valuable player in the Marmonte League in the 1983-84 season.

Registration Begins for Maccabee Basketball

A youth basketball tournament with a growing list of participants will be held Dec. 20-22 and Dec. 27-30 at five sites in the Valley.

The Maccabee Athletic Club/Valley Conference Youth Athletic Association Winter Holiday Basketball Tournament attracted 34 teams from Los Angeles, Ventura and San Diego counties last year. Nearly 60 games were played over four days. Organizers of the tournament expect an even larger turnout this year.

The tournament is divided into nine divisions, all for participants under 15 years old. Boys and girls teams will compete at Kennedy High in Mission Hills, Granada Hills High, Chatsworth High, Grant High, and Valley College.

Aerobic Dance Benefits Cystic Fibrosis

An aerobic dance fund-raising drive is scheduled to begin on Monday at 7 p.m. in Studio City. All proceeds will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The event, which will be led by four aerobic instructors and is open to the public, will be held at Nautilus Aerobics Plus. Participants will seek pledges for the completion of a one-hour workout. The fund-raiser will continue with daily sessions through Dec. 7.

KTIE-TV Begins Pepperdine Telecasts Tonight

KTIE-TV, based in Oxnard, will televise six Pepperdine men’s basketball games on a delayed basis, starting with tonight’s contest against Oklahoma State.

The game between the Waves, the West Coast Athletic Conference champions five of the last six seasons, and the Oklahoma State Cowboys will be shown at 11 p.m.

Other games scheduled for delay-basis telecast are: UC Santa Barbara, Dec. 22; Gonzaga, Jan. 16; Loyola Marymount, Jan. 24; San Diego, Feb. 6, and Santa Clara, Feb. 20.

Northridge Road Trip Includes Division I Teams

Cal State Northridge, which has voted to upgrade its athletic program from Division II to Division I, will get early idea of what the competition is like when it plays nonconference men’s basketball games tonight at Utah and Monday night at Weber State, a pair of Division I opponents.

CSUN returns home next Saturday to play host to Biola.

NOTABLE

Six players from the Moorpark College football team have earned All-Western State Conference honors.

Those selected to the first-team offense were linemen Blaine Wingle and Matt Hickman, and running back Jim Bittner. Named to the first-team defense were lineman Willie Tuiaana, linebacker Don Ott and defensive back Jeff Ebert.

On the second-team offense were Paul Mesa, Kyle Opp, James Reaves, Robert Davis and Dan Eastman. Named to the second-team defense were Scott Sasala, George McKenzie, Kevin Thomas and Willie Gutierrez.

Moorpark finished second in the conference behind Glendale.

Erik Kramer of Burroughs High and Pierce College will lead North Carolina State against Virgina Tech in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31. Kramer, who set 11 school passing records in two years, passed for 2,092 yards this season as the Wolf Pack finished 8-2-1, second in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
