San Diego High School Basketball : Mt. Miguel Defeats Serra, 44-39

For the second night in a row, Serra lost a fourth-quarter lead because of turnovers in a 44-39 loss to Mount Miguel Saturday at the Mount Helix Tournament.

Serra was successful in holding down the scoring of Mount Miguel’s 6-foot 10-inch Mike Flores but it couldn’t hold on to the ball when it needed to.

Against Mount Miguel, a four-point advantage in the game’s final two minutes slipped away as Serra made bad passes that resulted in Mount Miguel points. Flores had 12 points to lead Mount Miguel (2-1). Todd Knight had 10 points to lead Serra (0-3).

San Dieguito 52, Granite Hills 45--San Dieguito outscored Granite Hills, 18-12, in the final quarter to make the difference in a game that was tied for most of the first three periods. San Dieguito (3-1) was paced by Paul Chan with 19 points and Jack Minger with 15. Forward Chris Bahr also had 8 points and 9 rebounds for San Dieguito. Jim Tenney and Mike Phillips had 12 points each to lead Granite Hills (1-2).

FOOTHILLER

Grossmont 70, Oceanside 46--Jason Foggiano led all scorers with 20 points as Grossmont (2-1) ran up a 23-6 lead in the first quarter and coasted to an easy win over Oceanside (0-3). Grossmont had four of its starters score in double figures: Lane Williams with 14, Tom Aland with 12 and Greg Berman with 10. Darryl Noble led Oceanside with 19 points.

TORREY PINES

Clairemont 43, Carlsbad 41--Clairemont, 1-20 last season, has doubled that victory total already this season. The Chieftans improved their record to 2-0, leading the entire game and holding off a late charge by Carlsbad (1-2). Vic Baer had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead Clairemont, with teammate Mike Giordano adding 12 points. Carlsbad forward Shaun Stoll led all scorers with 16 points.

Fallbrook 67, Castle Park 66--Mark Ringkamp made a technical foul shot with 6 seconds remaining to give Fallbrook the win. The technical was called when a Castle Park argued a traveling call.

GIRLS

Crawford 45, Torrey Pines 27--Carmella Hicks had 18 points to lead Crawford, which won easily over Torrey Pines in the season opener for both teams. Karla Salmi and Laura Hatcher had 12 rebounds a piece for Crawford.
