Prep Soccer : Laguna Hills Upsets No. 1 Torrance, 1-0

Laguna Hills High School’s girls’ soccer team upset top-ranked Torrance, 1-0, in a nonleague match Tuesday at Torrance High School. Erin McGinnis scored on an assist from Joanna Noble 24 seconds into the second half for the game’s only goal.

Lynn Lambert had eight saves, six in the first half, in goal for the Hawks (3-0). Torrance, which was ranked first in 4-A, falls to 3-1.

In girls’ nonleague games:

Edison 1, Palos Verdes 0--Suelene Chen scored off of an Amy Valinsky assist with 11 minutes to play in the first half, and the Chargers held off the Sea Kings at Palos Verdes High. Defending 4-A champion Edison, ranked third in the 4-A division, improved to 4-1. Palos Verdes is 2-2.

Fullerton 4, California 1--After trailing, 1-0 at halftime, Indian forwards Mariellen Lindsay and Stacy Hargrave each scored during the first five minutes of the second half. Lindsay scored again on a corner kick with 10 minutes remaining. Sophomore Mary Reicks also scored for Fullerton (2-1).

Valencia 2, El Dorado 0--Allison Hook and Kameron Sweeney each scored in the second half as the Tigers (2-0) beat the Golden Hawks (0-2) at El Dorado.

In boys’ nonleague soccer:

Orange 3, Fountain Valley 1--Senior sweeper Victor Esparza scored three goals to lead the Panthers (3-1-1) at Orange.

The Barons drop to 0-4-1.

La Mirada 3, Brea-Olinda 2--Kevin Westplatt’s diving header broke a 2-2 tie 25 minutes into the second half at La Mirada High.

Brea (1-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Mike Oziminski, but Sean Tafoya answered with a goal to tie the match for the Matadores (3-1). The Wildcats went ahead, 2-1, on Kenny Claborn’s 25-yard shot, but La Mirada again came back, with Rueben Morales scoring early in the second half.

Los Amigos 4, Anaheim 1--Enrique Rivera scored two goals, and Juan Pacheco and Tito Galvez each added a goal for the Lobos at Anaheim High. Goalie David Lovvorn made eight saves for Los Amigos (1-1). Jose Montes scored for Anaheim (0-2).

Millikan 2, Kennedy 1--Ram forwards John Carroll and Robert Vaughn scored in the first three minutes to give Millikan an early lead, and the Rams held off the Irish at Kennedy High. Fernando Sosa scored for Kennedy.

Capistrano Valley 3, Cerritos 0--Brent Schofield and Casey Calkins each scored goals to give the Cougars a 2-0 halftime lead, and Kurt Stremel scored the third goal for Capistrano Valley in the second half.

Magnolia 1, Katella 1--The Sentinels and Knights played to a tie at Katella High.
