Fairfax Routs El Camino Real, 103-48

Few people expected El Camino Real High to have much of a chance against Fairfax, which last week routed defending City champion Crenshaw.

Few people expect any team to have much of a chance against the Lions.

Ranked No. 8 in the nation by USA Today, Fairfax High lived up to its reputation, defeating El Camino Real, 103-48, on Tuesday in a Valley 4-A League game.

Fairfax (5-0) was led by J.D. Green, a 6-8 forward who scored 28 points and had 11 rebounds.

“J.D. Green played tremendously,” Fairfax Coach Harvey Kitani said. “He did a great job on offense and played a strong defense.

“I was very pleased with our teamwork. The guys showed that they have the mental discipline to work hard.”

The Lions’ defense caused El Camino (1-1), to commit 26 turnovers.

The game began with 6-8 center Sean Higgins, who has signed a letter of intent to play next season at UCLA, scoring eight of the first 10 points for the Lions.

Fairfax put on a full-court press, and pulled out to a quick 22-11 lead, which was culminated by a slam dunk by junior Chris Mills, who is 6-8.

At halftime, Fairfax led, 59-32, and it didn’t get any better for El Camino. “We played a good first half,” El Camino Coach Mike McNulty said, “we just made some poor decisions.”

The Conquistadores were led by Sean Davis, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

For the game, Fairfax’s Higgins finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists while teammate Chris Mills ended up with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
