This time, there would be no second-half comebacks, no deep passes and no victory for University High School.

Reseda, which saw a 24-7 lead disappear in a 29-24 loss to University in Pac-8 League play, overwhelmed the Warriors Thursday night with big scoring plays and rolled to a 37-0 victory at Birmingham in the 2-A final, giving the Regents their first City football title.

Reseda, which dominated the line of scrimmage in the first game, was simply too big for University. The Warriors also hurt themselves with six turnovers, four on interceptions thrown by quarterback Daryl Hobbs.

Reseda Coach Joel Schaeffer, who said he would not use the same coverage that allowed Hobbs to throw three long touchdown passes in the first game, mixed up the coverage and, as a result, University receivers Paul Richardson and Marc Rodgers were virtually shut down.

Reseda’s junior tailback Ronald Wilkinson rushed 18 times for 177 yards and 3 touchdowns, one coming on an 80-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. He also scored on runs of 7 and 32 yards. Chris Vargas added 136 yards in 16 carries.

Reseda quarterback Donnie Grant, meanwhile, threw for touchdowns on plays of 35 and 79 yards to tight end David Wilson.

Few things, if any, went right for University.

In the first quarter, University drove to the Reseda 10-yard line on its only real offensive threat, but Hobbs threw the first of three first-half interceptions on second and goal, Wilson grabbing a tipped ball at the goal line and returning it to the Reseda 11.

Five plays later, Grant completed a 79-yard touchdown pass play to Wilson, who came down with the ball after battling Rodgers for it at the University 45-yard line, making it 14-0. Wilson later scored on a a 35-yard pass play in the third quarter.
