Padres’ Hoyt Gets 45-Day Term
Padre right-hander LaMarr Hoyt was sentenced today to 45 days in federal prison on a misdemeanor drug conviction over the objections of a prosecutor who urged more prison time for the former Cy Young Award winner.
“It has nothing to do with him being a star baseball player,” U.S. Magistrate Roger McKee said of Hoyt’s sentence, which included five years of supervised probation and a $5,025 fine. Hoyt was arrested Oct. 28 at the Mexican border when Customs inspectors caught him trying to smuggle hundreds of narcotic pills into the United States.
