Orange County Community College Basketball : Cypress Beats George AFB, 97-66

Sophomore guard Andy Olivarez scored 20 points and teammate Jim Sammon added 18 to lead Cypress College to a 97-66 victory over George Air Force Base Friday night in the Cypress College Thoroughbred Tournament.

The win advances the Chargers to the championship tonight at 8:30 p.m. against Rancho Santiago.

Cypress led 40-24 at the half and was also helped by Jeff Green who scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

In other Cypress Tournament games:

Rancho Santiago 80, Santa Monica 69--Chris Jackson scored 26 points for the Dons as they advanced into the championship.

Santa Monica plays George AFB at 6:30 p.m. for third place.

Fullerton 88, Tacoma 87 (2 OT)--The Hornets trailed by 5 points with 15 seconds left in regulation but tied the score at 72-72 on a three-point play by Bill Buda and a steal and slam by Troy Joseph.

Buda led Fullerton (9-3) with 20 points and Joseph, who also made the winning basket in the second overtime, had 14. All of Joseph’s points came after halftime.

Fullerton plays L.A. Harbor for the consolation championship at 4:30 p.m.

In the Riverside Tournament:

Saddleback 66, Grossmont 61--Vincent Smalls scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Gauchos (10-3) into the championship game.

Saddleback scored 10 straight points in the first half to turn a 9-2 deficit into a 12-10 lead. The Gauchos led the rest of the game.

Tom Desiano scored 16 points and had seven assists for Saddleback. Shaun Manning led Grossmont (9-4) with 23 points.

Imperial Valley 69, Orange Coast 68--The Pirates made only 27 of 70 shots from the field and were 10 of 19 from the free-throw line and were eliminated from the tournament.

A three-point shot with three seconds remaining brought the Pirates to within one.

OCC Coach Tandy Gillis was also called for two technical fouls which resulted in three points and an extra possession for Imperial Valley.

Sophomore forward Rob Mase scored a season-high 28 points for OCC (13-3). Chuck McGavran scored 11, Matt Judd and Mike Kelly 10 also for the Pirates.

In the Glendale Tournament:

Golden West 91, East Los Angeles 79--Anthony Howard scored 21 points and Jim Stewart 14 for the Rustlers. Golden West plays Grace Harbor today at 3:30 p.m. in the consolation championship.

In the Cuesta women’s tournament:

Golden West 88, Kings River 81--Guard Jenene Battaglia scored 26 points, April Marion scored 18 and Stacy Barnes 15 and Jane Utu had 14 for the Rustlers (12-0) in one semifinal.

Golden West plays Orange Coast in the championship tonight at 8 p.m. The Pirates defeated Foothill, 76-72 to advance.

In nonleague:

Cerritos 77, Cypress 71 (overtime)--Pam Fritsch scored 20 points and had 8 rebounds for the Chargers (7-5).
