BRIEFLY : Former Kennedy Goalie to Play in Senior Bowl

David Jacques of Cal State Los Angeles, a former All-City goalkeeper from Kennedy High, is one of 36 senior soccer players competing in the Senior Bowl today in Orlando, Fla.

Jacques was a first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. selection and was named All-Far West first-team by the National Soccer Coaches Assn.

Jacques had a school-record 27 shutouts and 307 saves in his career at Cal State L.A.

Van Nuys Ice Skater Qualifies for Nationals

Christopher Bowman of Van Nuys won the senior men’s title last weekend at the Pacific Coast Section figure skating championships in Phoenix.

The victory qualified Bowman, 19, for the U.S. championships Feb. 3-8 in Tacoma, Wash.

Other Valley skaters who qualified last week for the nationals include: Tamara Kuchiki, 12, of Canoga Park, who finished fourth in the novice ladies division; and Rick Alexander, 16, of Simi Valley, and Natasha Kuchiki, 10, who were fourth in junior pairs.

Tiffany Chin, 19, of Toluca Lake and Cindy Bortz, 15, of Tarzana already had qualified for the nationals in the senior ladies division. Bortz, a sophomore at Reseda High, won the junior world championship Dec. 6 in Kitchener, Canada.

Sutton, Dameworth Enter Sunkist Race

Melissa Sutton of Newbury Park and Bryan Dameworth of Agoura head a list of Valley-area athletes who have entered the high school portion of the Sunkist Invitational indoor track meet Jan. 16 at the Sports Arena.

Sutton, who won her third straight Southern Section 4-A cross-country title on Nov. 15, and Dameworth, who finished third in the Southern Section 2-A cross-country championships, will compete in the girls and boys seeded two-mile races.

Christy Farrell of Thousand Oaks also will compete in the seeded two-mile, and Ian Alsen of Granada Hills and Mike Esparza of Newbury Park will run in the boys rated two-mile.

Sharon Manship of Thousand Oaks is entered in the 800 meters, and teammate Staci Leach is entered in the 500 meters. Manship and Leach also will join teammates Kirsten Dally and Robin Bellamy in the mile relay.

City Section champion Jay Borick of Taft and Tom Parker of Notre Dame are entered in the pole vault.

NOTABLE

Deena Drossin, 13, of Agoura won the Youth Division (for athletes born in 1971 and ‘72) of The Athletics Congress Junior Olympic National cross-country championships at UC Irvine last Saturday. Drossin ran a 15:08 for the 4,000-meter course. Her Las Virgenes Comets teammate, Tiffany York, 13, finished sixth in 15:56.

Last season, Denise Sitton led the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team in scoring in 12 of 29 games. Seventeen times, she was the team’s leading rebounder.

This season, the 6-1 senior has led or shared the lead in scoring in six of eight games and led in rebounding three times.

She has 1,083 points and needs only 34 more to move into second place on CSUN’s all-time scoring list. The record of 1,264 points is held by Paula Moran, who is presently an assistant coach.

Moran is also listed in CSUN record books as the team’s all-time rebounding leader with 559.

Sharon Manship of Thousand Oaks High finished second in an all-comers heptathlon competition at Cal State Long Beach last weekend. Manship, a senior who finished second in the 300-meter low hurdles at the Southern Section 4-A track championships in June, scored a personal best of 4,544 points. Her previous best was 4,118 points set in 1985.
