Pacific 10 Roundup : Taylor’s 30 Points Lead California Past Oregon, 78-67

Center Leonard Taylor scored a career-high 30 points Tuesday night to lead California to a 78-67 victory over Oregon at Berkeley.
Guard Kevin Johnson added 16 points and 8 assists for the Bears, and forward Eddie Javius had 12 points. Guard Anthony Taylor led Oregon with 21 points, and center Sven Meyer had 18.
The victory improved Cal’s record to 7-2 overall, 2-0 in conference. Oregon dropped to 4-4 and 0-2.
Oregon stayed close in the first 10 minutes of the game, but after the Ducks pulled to within one point, 16-15, on a jump shot by Taylor, Cal went on an 11-3 run that boosted its lead to 27-18 with 7:18 left in the half.
Cal moved ahead, 46-30, early in the second half, but Oregon then went on a 17-5 streak, led by Taylor, that sliced Cal’s lead to four points. A few minutes later, the Bears scored eight straight points, and stayed safely ahead the rest of the way.
Oregon St. 70, Stanford 66--Reserve forward Bill Sherwood broke away for an uncontested layup with eight seconds left, and the Beavers held off the fast-finishing Cardinal at Stanford.
Stanford, down 65-56 with a little more than a minute to play, outscored the Beavers, 10-3, in a span of 33 seconds to pull within two points, 68-66. Forward Todd Lichti and guard Novian Whitsitt each hit three-point shots to spark the comeback. Whitsitt’s shot with 24 seconds left closed the gap to two.
In the closing seconds, Stanford was trying to steal the ball in the backcourt when Sherwood got free underneath.
Lichti led all scorers, with 22 points. OSU center Jose Ortiz had 21 points, including 14 in the second half.
Both teams are 1-1 in the conference. The Beavers are 6-1 overall, Stanford 5-3.
Oregon State was ahead by six at halftime, but Stanford tied the score early in the second half and went ahead, with 5:19 remaining, on a three-point play by Whitsitt.
The Beavers went ahead to stay, 55-53, on a three-point shot by Eric Knox with 4:35 left.
