ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Boys’ Roundup : Smalley Helps Servite to Second OT Victory Over Verbum Dei

Tony Smalley scored three of his game-high 29 points in overtime Tuesday night to help Servite High School defeat Verbum Dei, 77-74, in a nonleague game in the Friars’ gym at Anaheim.

It marked the second time in five days that the Friars (6-5) had beaten the Eagles in overtime. Servite beat Verbum Dei, 79-76, in double overtime last Friday in the Tournament of Champions.

Nick Marusich added 20 points for Servite Tuesday night, but it was Brett Caya’s two free throws with 13 seconds remaining in regulation that tied the score, 70-70. Keith Williams led the Eagles with 27 points.

In other nonleague action:

Marina 53, La Quinta 46--Mark Georgeson made four free throws in the last two minutes, and the Vikings held the Aztecs scoreless during a 3:20 stretch of the fourth quarter, as Marina pulled away for the victory at La Quinta.

Georgeson score 17 points, and Steve Guild added 15 for the Vikings, who will travel to Honolulu Thursday to compete in the Walter Wong Tournament.

Mike Whitcomb scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Aztecs (4-4), who will travel to Las Vegas Thursday to play in the Prep Holiday Classic.

Long Beach Wilson 73, Huntington Beach 63--Keven Brazzell scored 26 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in a losing effort for the Oilers at Long Beach Wilson High. Jeff Flory added 13 points for Huntington Beach (4-4).

In San Deguito Tournament action:

Newport Harbor 56, San Dieguito 38--Jim Geerlings scored 14 points, and Tyler Koon added 10 to lead the Sailors past the Mustangs in the fifth-place game played at San Deguito High. John Alstrom had 11 rebounds, and Drew Sheward had 7 assists for Newport Harbor (3-4).

San Clemente 69, Orange Glen 61--Mark Broccardo scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help the Tritons defeat the Patriots in the ninth-place game at San Dieguito High. Justin Burrows added 17 points and 5 steals, and Mike Peters had 14 points for San Clemente (3-7).
