San Diego Roundup : Garvey Celebrity Golf Tournament Starts Monday at Bernardo Heights

The fourth annual Steve Garvey/Michelob Celebrity golf tournament will begin Monday at the Bernardo Heights Country Club.

The tournament is open to the public, but space is limited and on a first-come basis. Tournament fee per player is $275. Proceeds will benefit the PACE Center for Career Development and the University of San Diego Athletic Department.

Celebrity participants in past years have included Tony Gwynn, Graig Nettles, Rich Gossage, Tim Flannery and Garry Templeton of the Padres, and Rolf Benirschke and Eric Sievers of the Chargers.

Charger wide receiver Charlie Joiner will be honored by the San Diego City Firefighters at a dinner Jan. 17 in the La Jolla Marriott Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. Net proceeds will benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Assn. of San Diego County.

Michael Tuck, Channel 10 co-anchor, will be the master of ceremonies. Guest speakers will include Grambling State University football Coach Eddie Robinson, Charger quarterback Dan Fouts and Charger owner Alex Spanos.

The Broderick Cup, awarded annually to the nation’s outstanding woman collegiate athlete, will be presented Thursday at the 10th annual Woman Collegiate Athlete of the Year Banquet at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Grant Hotel.

Dinah Shore, a longtime booster of women’s athletics, will be honored at the dinner.

Candidates for the Broderick Cup are: Kamie Ethridge, University of Texas (basketball); Suzie Tuffey, North Carolina State (cross-country); Megan Donnelly, University of Massachusetts (field hockey); Page Dunlap, University of Florida (golf); Penney Hauschild, University of Alabama (gymnastics); Susan Lefebvre, Cal State Fullerton (softball); Jeanna Johnson, Stanford (swimming and diving); Gretchen Rush, Trinity University (tennis); Juliet Cuthbert, University of Texas (track and field) and Kim Oden, Stanford (volleyball). Last year’s Broderick Cup winner was Jackie Joyner of UCLA (track and field).

Sunday will be the last chance to save $33 on tickets for the MONY Tournament of Champions. Practice rounds begin Monday at La Costa.

Season tickets (grounds only) are $40 if purchased before Monday. After Monday, price will be $73. Season clubhouse and grounds tickets are $60 if purchased before Monday. After Monday, the price will be $93.

Qualifiers for the 1987 MONY T of C include Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Bob Tway, Raymond Floyd, Fuzzy Zoeller, Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite.

Daily advance ticket prices are $4 Monday, $6 Tuesday and $11 each day of the tournament. Daily ticket prices purchased at the gate are $5, $8 and $15.

Tickets may be purchased at all San Diego area golf shops, military installations and La Costa.

Two of America’s top gymnasts, Sabrina Mar and Doe Yamashiro, will preview their latest balance beam routines Thursday at 4 p.m. at the San Diego Hilton.

Mar and Yamashiro recently participated in the most extensive training camp in U.S. gymnastics history, training with 1984 Olympic Coach Don Peters and Mary Lou Retton’s coach, Bela Karolyi.
