Women’s Basketball Roundup : Schroeder Sparks USD Victory Over Idaho State, 79-53

Kelly Schroeder scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds Friday night to lead the University of San Diego past Idaho State, 79-53, in a nonconference women’s college basketball game at the USD Sports Center.

Candida Echeverria added 11 points and Karen Skemp had 10 for USD (4-6). Idaho State (5-5) was led by Susanne Murphy with 14 points.

USD led at halftime, 40-32. The Toreras play host to Idaho at 7:30 tonight.

USIU 82, Idaho 64--Sonya Carter scored 26 points and Fiona Murray added 16 to lead USIU to the nonconference victory at La Jolla. Sheri Lehmer scored 21 points to lead Idaho. The Gulls opened a 34-30 halftime lead and extended the margin with a 15-8 run in the first seven minutes of the second half. USIU never trailed by less than 11 points the rest of the way. Both are 5-6.

Stanford 62, UCLA 60--Freshman guard Jennifer Azzi hit two free throws with three seconds left to lead the Cardinal victory. The game was the Pacific 10 opener for both teams. UCLA is 5-4 overall. Stanford improved to 7-3.

California 102, USC 85--The Trojan women lost at Berkeley in another Pacific 10 opener. Senior center Jennifer Bennett scored 35 points for Cal, while freshman forward Seija Leino added 32. Rhonda Windham scored 25 for USC and Monica Lamb had 22. USC fell to 6-4 overall; Cal is 8-1.
