NEW YORK — West Coast horses and their connections dominated thoroughbred racing’s Eclipse Awards today, with Lady’s Secret, a diminutive gray daughter of Secretariat and odds-on favorite for Horse of the Year, named on all ballots as older filly or mare champion for 1986. Her trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, and owners, Eugene and Joyce Klein, won their second straight awards. Klein once owned the San Diego Chargers.
West Coast winners were: Capote, 2-year-old; Brave Raj, 2-year-old filly; Snow Chief, 3-year-old; Tiffany Lass, 3-year-old filly; Estrapade, female turf, Turkoman, older male, and Pat Day, jockey. Also honored were: Manila, male turf; Smile, sprint; Flatterer, steeplechase; Allen Stacy, apprentice jockey, and Paul Mellon, breeder. Horse of the Year will be announced Jan. 30.
