Orange County Girls’ Basketball : Smith, Johnson Pace Edison Past Marina

Kristi Smith scored 14 points and Stacee Johnson had 10 points and 8 rebounds Thursday night as Edison High School girls’ basketball team rolled to a 49-30 victory over Marina in the Sunset League opener for both at Edison.

The Chargers (15-1) outscored the Vikings (9-7), 15-3, in the fourth period to pull away. Dawn Charroin led Marina with 13 points.

In another Sunset League game:

Ocean View 51, Fountain Valley 40--Dalene Lawson scored 22 points and Cindy Hurzler added 20 to lead the Seahawks (8-7) at Ocean View.

In Empire League games:

Esperanza 79, Pacifica 9--Karri Dalla Rosa scored 17 points and Laura Jones added 15 as the Aztecs (3-1, 9-5) routed the Mariners at Esperanza.

Los Alamitos 58, Cypress 47--Jennifer Ensley scored 20 points and Diane Pohl 15 to lead the Griffins at Cypress.

In an Angelus League:

Mater Dei 42, Bishop Montgomery 41--Hallie Formaneck made two free throws with 20 seconds left to clinch the Monarchs’ victory at Torrance. Formaneck and Geri Ganey led Mater Dei (1-0, 11-5) with 11 points each.

In nonleague games:

Brea-Olinda 65, Chaffey 42--Susan Tousey scored 21 points and Amy McDaniel 15 to pace the Wildcats at Brea.

Woodbridge 53, Irvine 41--The Warriors (9-5), led by Randee Mahony’s 16 points and Nina Hansen’s 8 points and 12 assists rolled past the Vaqueros (7-6) at Woodbridge.

Newport Harbor 42, Santa Ana Valley 41--Chantel DeFord scored 21 points to lead the Sailors (6-5) over the Falcons (6-3) at Newport Harbor.

Laguna Beach 45, San Clemente 36--The Artists, with Felicia Chalmers scoring 15 points and Liz Stall had 9 points and 16 rebounds, gained their 7th victory in 10 starts.

Canyon 38, Troy 34--Kari Erkenbrack scored 16 points to lead the Comanches (7-5) at Canyon.

Foothill 56, Tustin 34--The Knights are 11-3 as Sue Davis scored 15 points, Robin Welch 13 and Nagala Mitchell 11. Magnolia 55, Schurr 50--The Sentinels won their 12th in 14 starts with Katy Donica scoring 21 points and Rena Rossoll had 16 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocked shots.

Estancia 55, Laguna Hills 30--Robine Grienier scored 12 points and Shawna Newbern 11 to lead the Eagles (7-6) at Laguna Hills.

Villa Park 59, Saddleback 35--Dean Korose had 13 points and 14 assists and Susie Barnett chipped in with 17 points to pace the Spartans (3-8) at Villa Park.

Buena Park 68, Anaheim 30--Kelly Hilliard scored 22 points, Felicia Benjamins 12 and LaTosha Aubrey 10 to lead the Coyotes (7-4) at Anaheim.
